School Waiting Lists in Pakistan: What They Mean and What Parents Can Do
A waiting-list letter is neither a yes nor a no. We read what Pakistani schools and the Islamabad regulator publish about waiting lists, offer deadlines and refunds, so you can keep chasing the school you want without losing the seat you already have.
Short answer
A waiting-list place is not an offer, so keep your other options alive. Ask the school in writing how its list is ordered, how long it stays open and how it will contact you. Accept a firm offer elsewhere before its deadline, after checking which fees you would lose. Not every school keeps one: the 2025-round notice still on Karachi Grammar School's site ruled out a waiting list.
How we researched this: On 27 October 2026 we read the admissions pages of Karachi Grammar School, Karachi American School (including its 2026-2027 tuition and fees page), National Grammar School Lahore, Aitchison College (admissions information, important dates and estimated seats for 2027-28, and its 2026-27 fee structure), Lawrence College (session 2027), OPF Public School Sheikhupura and Sadiq Public School, St Patrick's Girls' High School Karachi's Class I notice for 2027-2028, ProPakistani's 30 July 2026 report on the Federal Directorate of Education's HSSC-I schedule, PEIRA's registration portal, and the PEIRA Rules 2024 as published in the Gazette of Pakistan on 20 February 2025 (a scanned copy on PEIRA's website, which we read page by page). We did not find official refund rules for Punjab, Sindh or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that we could open, so they are not covered. The directory figures are from our own campus-count script, run on 27 October 2026 across all 6,666 records.
Being put on a waiting list means the school has not filled every seat with you, but has not ruled you out either. If a family that was offered a place turns it down, or a seat opens later, the school may go back to its list. Schools treat this very differently. Karachi American School's admissions page says there are waiting lists in many grades and urges families to apply early. National Grammar School in Lahore warns that particular year groups may have waiting lists and that children can join in many cases throughout the year, depending on seat availability. Karachi Grammar School is a counter-example, at least for one cycle: the closed-admissions notice for its 2025 round, which pointed families to December 2025 for the year starting in August 2026 and was still on its site when we checked on 27 October 2026, ruled out both a waiting list and late admissions for that round. So the first thing to establish is whether the school you want keeps a list at all, and what it means by one.
A school saying that places may open is not evidence that its list moves, or that it will reach your child. Aitchison College's admissions page says the college reserves the right to offer additional places to eligible students at any time and at any year level to reach full capacity. Its estimate for 2027-28 is 325 seats across nine grades (225 for day boys and 100 for boarders), and the page notes the numbers are an estimate and may change at admission testing. According to Lawrence College's admissions page, any casual vacancy that arises mid-year is filled in March. Neither of those pages says how many candidates were later admitted this way, so treat any later place as possible, not likely.
Order matters too, and it is not always test rank. OPF Public School Sheikhupura lists its admission priority as children of registered OPF members and brothers and sisters of children already studying in the school, then children of Pakistan or AJK government employees (transfer cases only), with that entry qualified as subject to seats being available in the class. Children of overseas Pakistanis are considered through the session only if the desired class has a vacancy. If the school you want gives siblings or staff children priority, a family who applies after you can still be placed ahead of you. Ask how the list is ranked, and whether your position can change.
When a place does come up, the time to respond can be short, and so is the time a backup school will hold a seat for you. Karachi American School's 2026-2027 fees page says a new student's one-time registration fee must be paid within one week, or the place will be given to another applicant at the school's discretion. For HSSC-I admission to Islamabad Model Colleges in 2026-27, ProPakistani reported that the Federal Directorate of Education would display the first merit list on 17 August 2026, selected students had to submit the admission fee by 18 August, the second merit list followed on 19 August and classes began on 20 August. Aitchison's 2027-28 calendar puts offer letters and the deadline to accept them both in June 2027, and fee submission in July 2027. Keep your phone and email current with every school on your list, because a missed call during a short window can cost the seat.
The hardest decision is whether to pay to hold a seat at your second choice while you wait for your first. Some of what you pay will not come back. Lawrence College charges a PKR 5,000 admission processing fee per application and says it is not refunded, whether or not the candidate is offered a place; accepting an offer there requires paying the admission and term fees within the deadline the offer gives. Karachi American School describes its application fee and its registration fee for new students as non-refundable, and says tuition is refunded in full only if the school is told in writing before the semester's first day, with 50% back within the first 30 calendar days and nothing after that. Aitchison's fee page for 2026-27 puts the admission fee, payable at the time of admission, at Rs 175,000 under its Govt. heading or Rs 350,000 under Non-Govt., and adds a Rs 100,000 security deposit marked refundable. Before you pay any school, get its refund terms in writing and work out what you would lose if your first choice called a week later.
For private schools in Islamabad, the regulator's rules bear directly on this. PEIRA's registration portal says schools register under the Private Educational Institutions (Registration, Regulation and Promotion) Rules, 2024, which were notified as S.R.O. 179(I)/2025 in the Gazette of Pakistan on 20 February 2025. Under rule 6(x), a school's security fee is refunded when the student leaves, after any arrears are deducted, but the admission fee is refunded only if the student leaves within thirty days of paying it. Rule 17 says a school may not withhold the leaving certificate or the security refund without a legal ground, requires parents to tell the school one month before leaving, and lets parents complain to PEIRA if a school breaks this. The rule is written for a student who leaves the school, and it does not say how a fee paid to hold a seat your child never takes up is treated, so ask the school about that case in writing before you pay. Outside Islamabad, we were unable to open an official refund rule for Punjab, Sindh or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa this time, so the school's own written refund policy is what you will have to go on.
While you wait, follow up in a way that keeps you on the school's radar without pestering. Send one short written message confirming you still want the place, your child's form or application number, and the best phone number and email to reach you. Ask how long the list stays open, whether it rolls over to the next session or you must apply again, and how quickly you would need to accept and pay if called. Then check in near the dates that matter, such as just after the school's own acceptance deadline has passed, when it will know which offers were taken up. Some schools treat payment, not a letter, as the point of commitment: Sadiq Public School, for example, says admission is not confirmed until parents submit a receipt showing the admission fee has been paid.
Keep at least one backup moving at the same time, because school calendars do not wait for each other. St Patrick's Girls' High School in Karachi, for its Class I morning shift for 2027-2028, issues test forms on one day only, 5 December 2026, takes them back on 12 December 2026 and tests on 9 and 16 January 2027, with a Rs 3,500 test fee. Missing a single date like that removes a school from your list entirely. Two of our guides help with the backup applications themselves: one on timing (/news/best-time-to-apply-school-admission-pakistan) and one on paperwork (/news/school-admission-documents-pakistan).
SchoolNama can help you widen the field, though not with waiting-list status, which we do not hold in verified form for any school. As of 27 October 2026 our directory has 6,666 campus records across 15 cities, including 2,758 in Islamabad, 1,528 in Karachi, 1,071 in Rawalpindi and 449 in Lahore; these are listings in our directory, not a count of every school in each city. Checklist before you decide
- ✓Confirm in writing whether the school keeps a waiting list at all, and that your child is on it, with the form or application number.
- ✓Ask how the list is ranked (test merit, siblings, staff or member children) and whether your position can change.
- ✓Ask how long the list stays open, whether it carries into the next session, and whether you must reapply.
- ✓Ask how you will be contacted and how many days you would have to accept and pay if a seat opens.
- ✓Keep at least one backup application moving, and note every backup school's form, test and acceptance dates.
- ✓Before paying to hold a backup seat, get that school's refund terms in writing for the application, registration or admission fee, tuition and security deposit.
- ✓Work out the money you would lose if your first choice called after you paid the backup, and decide in advance whether you would switch.
- ✓At a private school in Islamabad, note that PEIRA's 2024 Rules refund the admission fee only if your child leaves within thirty days of paying it, and require one month's notice before leaving.
- ✓Send one short written follow-up confirming interest, then check in again just after the school's acceptance deadline has passed.
- ✓Look for nearby alternatives through /schools or a city page, and weigh your finalists on /compare.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean if my child is on a school's waiting list?
It means the school has not offered your child a place yet but may do so if a seat opens, for example when an offered family declines. It is not an offer, and the school is not obliged to reach your child. Practices differ: Karachi American School and National Grammar School in Lahore mention waiting lists, while Karachi Grammar School's notice for its 2025 round said it kept none for that round.
Should I pay a backup school while I wait?
You may have to, because some offers lapse quickly; Karachi American School, for example, says its registration fee must be paid within one week. Before paying, get the refund terms in writing. Some fees are never returned: Lawrence College's PKR 5,000 processing fee and Karachi American School's registration fee are non-refundable, while Aitchison marks its Rs 100,000 security deposit refundable.
Can a sibling get ahead of my child on a waiting list?
At some schools, yes. OPF Public School Sheikhupura gives priority to children of registered OPF members and to brothers and sisters of children already studying there, ahead of other groups. Ask each school how it ranks its list.
Will I get the admission fee back if my child leaves a private school in Islamabad?
Only within a short window. PEIRA's 2024 Rules, gazetted on 20 February 2025, say a private school refunds the admission fee if the student leaves within thirty days of paying it, and refunds the security fee on leaving after deducting arrears. Parents must give the school one month's notice before leaving, and can complain to PEIRA if the school withholds the leaving certificate or security refund without a legal ground. Confirm the terms with the school in writing.
How long do waiting lists last?
You will need to ask, because no school page we opened gives a lifespan for its list. Some fill later vacancies at a set time: Lawrence College says casual vacancies arising mid-year are filled in March. Ask whether the list ends when the session starts or carries over, and whether you need to apply again next year.
Can I see a school's waiting-list status on SchoolNama?
No. We do not hold verified waiting-list information for any school. Use SchoolNama to find and compare alternatives, then ask each school directly about seats.
