What Age Should a Child Start Playgroup in Pakistan?

Most Pakistani schools that publish a playgroup rule start it somewhere between two and three, but each one measures age on its own date, and at least one school uses the word 'Playgroup' for three-year-olds. Here is what the published rules actually say, and what to check before you apply.

SchoolNama Editorial · 27 October 2026 · 7 min read

Short answer

Usually between two and three, but it depends on the school. The City School starts Playgroup at 2.5+, The CAS School at 2.4 to 3.3 years on 1 August, and Maktab at two by 30 June. But The Punjab School's Playgroup is for ages three to four, and Islamabad's government ECE-I class started at three under FDE's 2025-26 notice. The school's own cut-off date decides.

How we researched this: On 27 October 2026 we read the admission age rules published by The City School, The CAS School, Maktab, The Punjab School (2026-27 session), Sadiq Public School and the Federal Directorate of Education's 2025-26 admission notice, plus the US CDC's milestones for age three. SchoolNama counts come from a script run the same day over our 6,666 campus records.

There is no single national playgroup age in Pakistan. Playgroup is not part of compulsory schooling: Article 25-A of the Constitution, as quoted in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's 2017 education law, covers children aged five to sixteen. So each school sets its own rule, and the ones that publish them do not agree on the age, the date age is measured on, or even what 'Playgroup' means.

Start with the schools that put their rules online. The City School's admissions page lists Playgroup at 2.5+, Nursery at 3+, Kindergarten at 4+ and Class 1 at 5+. It measures age on 31 July at campuses whose session starts in August, and on 28 February where the session starts in March or April. The CAS School says children aged 2.4 to 3.3 years on 1 August of the admitting year are eligible for Playgroup, that admission is based on an interview with the parents, and that children are not tested. Maktab, whose address is on Raiwind Road near Lahore Zoo Safari, says a child should be two by 30 June of the entry year for Playgroup, three for Nursery and four for KG.

Now the exception that catches parents out. The Punjab School's admission notice for the 2026-27 session sets Playgroup at three to four years and Nursery at four to five, both measured on 1 March of the year of admission, with a minimum of five for Prep and six for Class I. A child who is a 'Playgroup' child at The City School would not be old enough for Playgroup at The Punjab School. The class names are the same; the ages behind them are not.

Government schools in Islamabad start later still, and use different names. The Federal Directorate of Education's admission notice for the 2025-26 session of Islamabad Model Schools and Colleges set ECE-I at three to four years, ECE-II/Prep at four to five and Class I at five to six, all measured on 31 March 2025, with a general relaxation of three months on the upper age limit. It offered ECE-I and ECE-II only at selected institutions and held an interview for ECE-I. FDE's 2026-27 admissions now run through its online portal, and we could not find a 2026-27 age rule on its notice, so confirm the current band with FDE before you apply. Sadiq Public School in Bahawalpur does not run a playgroup at all on its published chart: its minimum admission age is three years six months, for Nursery.

The cut-off date can move a child by a whole year. Take a child born on 15 March 2024. On 31 July 2026 they are two years and four months old, below The City School's 2.5+ line for Playgroup at a campus whose session started in August 2026. By the next 31 July cut-off, in 2027, they will be three years and four months, which on the same chart is the Nursery (3+) band. So at an August-session campus, our reading of that chart is that a child just short of the playgroup cut-off may skip Playgroup and join at Nursery a year later; the school does not say this itself, and at a March/April-session campus, with its 28 February cut-off, the same child would be two years eleven months in February 2027 and could still fit the Playgroup band. Ask each school whether it would place your child in Playgroup or Nursery, and on what date it measures age, before you decide anything.

Readiness matters as much as the rule, and at this age it is mostly about separation, play and self-care, not letters and numbers. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists things most children (75 per cent or more) can do by age three: calm down within ten minutes after a caregiver leaves, such as at a childcare drop-off; notice other children and join them in play; say their first name when asked; put on some clothes by themselves; and use a fork. These are milestones for three, not two and a half, so a child starting playgroup at 2.5 may still be working towards them. That is normal. What you want to know is how the school handles it: how long the settling-in period is, whether you can stay for the first days, and how staff deal with a child who cries at drop-off.

Some schools assess even this young. The City School says that for Playgroup to Kindergarten it generally looks at reading level, vocabulary, colours and numbers, as well as confidence, spoken English and motor skills. The CAS School says it interviews the parents and does not test children. If a school says it assesses playgroup applicants, ask what that involves and whether a shy two-year-old is at a disadvantage.

SchoolNama's own directory shows how hard this is to research from listings alone. Of the 6,666 campus records across our 15 launch cities, only 11 list a class range that starts at Playgroup or Toddler level, all in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. A further 214 are labelled 'Early years' or 'Early years / Primary', and 4,397 do not list a class range at all. So a school's SchoolNama listing will usually not tell you whether it takes playgroup children, or from what age. Use /schools or your city page, such as /karachi, /lahore or /islamabad, to build a shortlist, then call or visit each school for its age chart. When you have two or three options, /compare lets you line them up side by side. If you are also weighing up teaching approaches, SchoolNama's guides on Montessori vs traditional schooling (/news/montessori-vs-traditional-school-pakistan) and Montessori vs play-based learning (/news/montessori-vs-play-based-learning) cover that choice.

Checklist before you decide

  • ✓Ask each school for its playgroup age rule and the exact date it measures age on, in writing.
  • ✓Work out your child's age on that date, to the month, not just the year.
  • ✓Ask what the school calls each class: 'Playgroup' means ages 2 to 3 at some schools and 3 to 4 at others.
  • ✓If your child is just short of the cut-off, ask whether they would join Nursery the following year instead.
  • ✓Ask whether playgroup applicants are assessed or only parents are interviewed, and what the assessment covers.
  • ✓Ask about the settling-in period: how long it lasts and whether a parent can stay for the first days.
  • ✓Check basic self-care expectations, such as toilet training, before the first day.
  • ✓Keep your child's birth certificate ready; The City School, for example, asks for an attested copy.
  • ✓Shortlist on /schools or your city page, then confirm each school's rule by phone or visit, because most SchoolNama listings do not yet show class ranges.

Frequently asked questions

What is the right age for playgroup in Pakistan?

Usually between two and three, depending on the school. The City School lists Playgroup at 2.5+, The CAS School takes children aged 2.4 to 3.3 years on 1 August, and Maktab asks for two by 30 June. But The Punjab School's Playgroup is for ages three to four, and Islamabad's government ECE-I class started at three under FDE's 2025-26 notice. Check the school's own chart.

Is playgroup compulsory in Pakistan?

No. Compulsory education under Article 25-A of the Constitution covers children aged five to sixteen. Playgroup and other pre-school years are optional, and each school sets its own age rule.

My child is a few weeks short of the playgroup cut-off. What happens?

Under a strict published rule, a child below the minimum on the reference date cannot join that class that year. At The City School, for example, a child born on 15 March 2024 is two years four months on 31 July 2026, below the 2.5+ Playgroup line for an August 2026 session, and would be in the Nursery (3+) band by the 2027 cut-off. Ask the school how it would place your child.

Do schools test children for playgroup admission?

Some do and some do not. The City School says it looks at things such as vocabulary, colours, numbers, confidence, spoken English and motor skills for Playgroup to KG. The CAS School says it interviews parents and does not test children. Ask each school what its process is.

What should my child be able to do before starting playgroup?

No school we checked publishes a readiness list for playgroup. As a guide, the US CDC says most children can, by age three, calm down within ten minutes after a caregiver leaves, join other children in play, say their first name and put on some clothes alone. A child starting at 2.5 may still be working towards these, which is normal.

Does SchoolNama show which schools have a playgroup?

Not reliably yet. Only 11 of our 6,666 campus records list a class range starting at Playgroup or Toddler level, and 4,397 do not list a class range at all. Use SchoolNama to build a shortlist by city, then confirm the classes and age rule with each school directly.
