Class 1 Admission Age in Pakistan: What Parents Need to Check
Most published Class 1 rules in Pakistan start at five, but not all: one Lahore school sets a minimum of six, and another admits at five and a half. Here is what the law says, what schools actually publish, and the dates and documents to check before you apply.
Short answer
Usually five, but not everywhere: the Federal Directorate of Education used five to six on 31 March for 2025-26, The City School uses 5+, and Sadiq Public School uses five to six. But The Punjab School sets a minimum of six for Class I, and Lawrence College admits at five and a half to six and a half. Check the school's own cut-off date.
How we researched this: On 27 October 2026 we read the Class 1 admission rules published by the Federal Directorate of Education (its 2025-26 notice and current 2026-27 notice), The City School, Sadiq Public School, The Punjab School (2026-27 session), Lawrence College (page reviewed 17 September 2026) and Aitchison College (age guidelines headed 2027-28), the text of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's 2017 compulsory education law, and the US CDC's milestones for age five. SchoolNama counts come from a script run the same day over our 6,666 campus records.
Start with the law, because it sets the floor but not the date. Article 25-A of the Constitution, quoted in the preamble of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Free Compulsory Primary and Secondary Education Act 2017, promises free and compulsory education to children aged five to sixteen. The KP Act defines a 'child' as someone whose age at the beginning of the school year is not less than five and not more than sixteen, and 'within the age limit prescribed for admission in class 1 to class 10th'. In other words, the law says school starts at five and leaves the exact Class 1 limits to be prescribed elsewhere. In practice, the school or school system you apply to sets the rule.
Most published rules put Class 1 at five. The Federal Directorate of Education's admission notice for the 2025-26 session of Islamabad Model Schools and Colleges set Class I at five to six years on 31 March 2025, with a general relaxation of three months on the upper age limit, and held an admission test for Class I on 9 April 2025. Admission was open to residents of Islamabad Capital Territory and to federal government employees living in Islamabad or Rawalpindi. FDE's current notice, for the 2026-27 session, points parents to its online admission portal; we could not find a 2026-27 age rule on that notice, so the 2025-26 band is the latest FDE rule we could verify. The City School lists Class 1 at 5+, measured on 31 July where the session starts in August and on 28 February where it starts in March or April. Sadiq Public School in Bahawalpur lists Grade 1 (K1) at five to six years on 31 March.
Not every school agrees. The Punjab School's admission notice for the 2026-27 session says the minimum age at the time of admission is five for Prep and six for Class I. Lawrence College lists its Class I age at entry as five and a half to six and a half, on a page its admissions office says it reviewed on 17 September 2026, though the page does not say on which date age is measured. Aitchison College in Lahore uses birth-date windows instead of ages: its age guidelines headed 2027-28 put Year 1 (K1) at children born between 1 June 2021 and 31 May 2022 inclusive.
That spread matters for real children. Take a child born on 10 January 2021. On 31 July 2026 they are five years six months old, which meets The City School's 5+ line for Class 1 at a campus whose session started in August 2026. But throughout 2026 they are still five, below The Punjab School's stated minimum of six for Class I, so at that school they would meet the Prep minimum instead. The same child can be in Class 1 at one school and a year behind at another. Ask every school on your shortlist for its Class 1 age band and reference date in writing, and check your child's exact age on that date.
Class 1 is often the first year with a written entry test. The City School says Class 1 applicants take a written test in English, Urdu and Mathematics, with a 50 per cent pass mark and 30 minutes to finish, and should bring a pencil, eraser, sharpener and ruler; it says the questions test basic aptitude rather than any particular textbook. Sadiq Public School says no child is admitted to any class without passing an admission test, but that its youngest classes, up to K2, are exempt from the written exam. The Punjab School says Prep and Class I places are given on merit from written tests in English, Urdu and Mathematics, held in mid-February. FDE held its Class I admission test on 9 April 2025. Ask what the test covers and in which languages, especially if your child's pre-school taught mostly in English.
Some deadlines are close. Lawrence College says applications for its 2027 session close before 12 November 2026, with a written entry test on Sunday 15 November 2026, results in December and the session starting in the first week of March 2027. FDE's 2025-26 registration, by comparison, ran from 17 to 28 March 2025. Dates differ by school and change each year, so check each school's current notice rather than assuming last year's dates.
Readiness is the other half of the decision. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists things most children (75 per cent or more) can do by age five, including following rules or taking turns in games, telling a story with at least two events, counting to ten, paying attention for five to ten minutes during activities, writing some letters of their name and hopping on one foot. These describe a typical five-year-old, not a pass mark. A child who is comfortable with them but not yet reading fluently is not behind; ask the Class 1 teacher what they expect in the first term.
SchoolNama's own directory cannot yet tell you which schools have Class 1 places or what their age rules are. Of our 6,666 campus records across 15 launch cities, 4,397 do not list a class range at all, and the ones that do usually show only a broad label such as 'Up to FSc / A Level', 'Up to Matric' or 'Up to Grade 5'. Use /schools or your city page, such as /lahore, /karachi or /islamabad, to shortlist, then confirm each school's Class 1 rule directly and compare finalists on /compare. Checklist before you decide
- ✓Get each school's Class 1 age band and reference date in writing, and work out your child's exact age on that date.
- ✓Check the upper limit too: FDE's 2025-26 Class I band stopped at six, with three months' relaxation.
- ✓Note that some schools use a minimum of six (The Punjab School) or five and a half (Lawrence College) instead of five.
- ✓Ask what the entry test covers, how long it is, the pass mark and which languages it uses.
- ✓Check registration and test dates on each school's current notice; some, like Lawrence College, close in November for a March start.
- ✓Ask each school for its document list. FDE's 2025-26 notice, for example, asked for parents' CNICs, residential proof, the previous class's result card and, from a private school, a PEIRA-verified school leaving certificate; The City School asks for an attested copy of the birth certificate.
- ✓Check your child against a typical five-year-old's milestones, and ask the Class 1 teacher what they expect in the first term.
- ✓Shortlist on /schools or your city page, confirm each rule with the school, and compare finalists on /compare.
Frequently asked questions
What age should a child be for Class 1 in Pakistan?
Usually five to six. FDE's 2025-26 notice used five to six on 31 March, The City School uses 5+, and Sadiq Public School uses five to six on 31 March. But The Punjab School sets a minimum of six for Class I, and Lawrence College admits at five and a half to six and a half. Always check the school's own rule.
Is there a law that sets the Class 1 age?
The law sets compulsory schooling from five, not a Class 1 cut-off date. Article 25-A covers children aged five to sixteen, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's 2017 Act defines a child as at least five at the start of the school year and within the age limit 'prescribed for admission'. The exact rule comes from the school or school system.
My child is six and a half. Is that too old for Class 1?
It can be, depending on the school. FDE's 2025-26 Class I band was five to six on 31 March, with three months' relaxation on the upper limit. Lawrence College's Class I band runs to six and a half. Ask the school for its upper limit and any relaxation before you apply.
What is in a Class 1 admission test?
It varies. The City School tests English, Urdu and Mathematics in a 30-minute written paper with a 50 per cent pass mark, and says questions test basic aptitude rather than a textbook. The Punjab School also tests English, Urdu and Mathematics, in mid-February. Sadiq Public School exempts its youngest classes, up to K2, from the written exam. Ask each school for its format.
When do Class 1 admissions open in Pakistan?
Each school sets its own dates. For example, FDE's 2025-26 registration ran from 17 to 28 March 2025 with the Class I test on 9 April, and Lawrence College's 2027 applications close before 12 November 2026. Check the current notice from each school on your shortlist.
Can SchoolNama tell me which schools have Class 1 places?
Not yet. Most of our 6,666 campus records do not list a class range, so they cannot show whether a school has Class 1 places. Use SchoolNama to shortlist schools by city, then confirm Class 1 places and age rules with each school directly.
