What Age Should a Child Start Nursery in Pakistan?

At most schools that publish a rule, Nursery is the class for three-year-olds, but the exact band and cut-off date differ from school to school, and at least one school uses 'Nursery' for four-to-five-year-olds. Here is what the published rules say and how to read them for your child.

Short answer

At most schools we checked, Nursery is for children aged three to four: The City School lists Nursery at 3+, Maktab at three by 30 June, and Habib Girls School's 2026-27 Nursery took children born between April 2022 and March 2023. Sadiq Public School starts Nursery at three and a half, and The Punjab School's Nursery is for ages four to five.

How we researched this: On 27 October 2026 we read the admission rules published by The City School, Sadiq Public School, The Punjab School (2026-27 session), Habib Girls School (Nursery 2026-27), Maktab, Karachi Grammar School (Nursery 2026 document verification) and the Federal Directorate of Education's 2025-26 admission notice, plus the US CDC's milestones for age four. SchoolNama counts come from a script run the same day over our 6,666 campus records.

Nursery is optional in Pakistan. Compulsory education under Article 25-A of the Constitution, as quoted in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's 2017 education law, starts at five, so there is no government-wide nursery age. Each school publishes its own rule, and the published rules differ in three ways: the age band, the date on which age is measured, and what the school means by 'Nursery'.

Most of the rules we read put Nursery at three. The City School's admissions page lists Playgroup at 2.5+, Nursery at 3+ and Kindergarten at 4+, with age measured on 31 July at campuses whose session starts in August, and on 28 February where the session starts in March or April. Maktab, on Raiwind Road in the Lahore area, asks for Nursery children to be three by 30 June of the entry year. Habib Girls School in Karachi said its Nursery intake for the 2026-27 session was open to children born between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023, that is, children who were three on 31 March 2026. It assesses reasoning, language and social skills without a written test, and interviews parents.

Some schools start later. Sadiq Public School in Bahawalpur lists Nursery (KO1) at three years six months to four years six months, measured on 31 March, and says three years six months is the minimum age for any admission. The Punjab School's admission notice for 2026-27 sets Nursery at four to five years on 1 March of the year of admission, with its Playgroup at three to four. So a child who would be in Nursery at The City School could be in Playgroup at The Punjab School in the same year. The Federal Directorate of Education's admission notice for Islamabad Model Schools and Colleges does not use the word Nursery: its 2025-26 notice set ECE-I at three to four years and ECE-II/Prep at four to five, measured on 31 March 2025, with a general relaxation of three months on the upper age limit, at selected institutions. We could not find a 2026-27 age rule on FDE's current notice, which sends parents to its online admission portal, so confirm the current band with FDE before you apply.

Here is how the cut-off date plays out. Take a child born on 10 May 2023. On 31 July 2026 they are three years two months old, which meets The City School's 3+ line for Nursery at a campus whose session started in August 2026. On 31 March 2026 they were two years ten months, below Sadiq Public School's minimum of three years six months, and they fall outside Habib Girls School's 2026-27 Nursery birth window. Same child, same year, three schools, two different answers. Before you plan, write down each shortlisted school's age band and reference date and check your child's age on that exact day.

Popular schools can be strict about proof of age. Karachi Grammar School's Nursery 2026 document verification asked for the child's original birth certificate (not a recent one) with a photocopy and the original B-Form, along with both parents' CNICs. The City School asks for an attested photocopy of the birth certificate. Get these documents in order early, especially if your child's birth was registered late.

Readiness at three to four is mostly about language, play and independence. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists things most children (75 per cent or more) can do by age four: speak in sentences of four or more words, talk about something that happened during the day, name a few colours, pretend to be other people or animals during play, unbutton some buttons, and hold a crayon or pencil between the fingers and thumb rather than in a fist. A child joining Nursery at three is not expected to tick all of these yet. If a school assesses Nursery applicants, as The City School says it does for Playgroup to Kindergarten (reading level, vocabulary, colours and numbers, confidence, spoken English and motor skills), ask what a typical three-year-old is expected to show.

SchoolNama's own data shows why you should confirm the class range with the school. Of our 6,666 campus records across 15 launch cities, only one lists a class range starting at Nursery and 11 start at Playgroup or Toddler level. A further 214 are labelled 'Early years' or 'Early years / Primary', and 4,397 do not list a class range at all. So most listings will not tell you whether a school runs a Nursery class. Use /schools or your city page, such as /karachi, /lahore or /rawalpindi, to shortlist, call each school for its age chart, then put your final two or three side by side on /compare. For the year before Nursery, see SchoolNama's guide to playgroup age (/news/playgroup-age-pakistan); for the move into Class 1 later, see when to move from Montessori to Grade 1 (/news/when-to-move-from-montessori-to-grade-1).

Checklist before you decide

  • ✓Ask each school for its Nursery age band and the date it measures age on, in writing.
  • ✓Work out your child's age to the month on each school's reference date.
  • ✓Check what the school calls each class: Nursery is for three-year-olds at most schools we checked, but for four-to-five-year-olds at The Punjab School.
  • ✓If your child misses a Nursery cut-off, ask which class they would join and when.
  • ✓Ask whether Nursery applicants are assessed, and whether parents are interviewed.
  • ✓Get the original birth certificate (not a recent extract, if the school asks for that) and Form-B ready, along with both parents' CNICs.
  • ✓Ask about settling-in, class size and how many adults are in the room.
  • ✓Shortlist on /schools or your city page, confirm the classes the school actually runs, and compare finalists on /compare.

Frequently asked questions

What is the normal nursery admission age in Pakistan?

Three to four at most schools that publish a rule. The City School lists Nursery at 3+, Maktab asks for three by 30 June, and Habib Girls School's 2026-27 Nursery took children born between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023. Sadiq Public School starts Nursery at three and a half, and The Punjab School's Nursery is for ages four to five.

Is there one cut-off date for nursery admission?

No. Each school sets its own. Among the rules we read, The City School uses 31 July or 28 February depending on the session, Sadiq Public School uses 31 March, The Punjab School uses 1 March, Maktab uses 30 June and Habib Girls School uses a birth-date window.

What is the difference between Playgroup, Nursery and Prep?

It depends on the school. At The City School, Playgroup is 2.5+, Nursery 3+ and Kindergarten 4+. At The Punjab School, Playgroup is three to four, Nursery four to five and Prep a minimum of five. FDE's 2025-26 notice for Islamabad Model Schools uses ECE-I (three to four) and ECE-II/Prep (four to five) instead. Compare ages, not class names.

Do schools test children for nursery admission?

Some assess, few use a written test. Habib Girls School says it assesses reasoning, language and social skills without a written test and interviews parents. The City School says it looks at reading level, vocabulary, colours, numbers, confidence, spoken English and motor skills for Playgroup to KG. Sadiq Public School exempts KO1 to K2, which includes Nursery, from its written exam, but says every child must pass an admission test.

What documents do I need for nursery admission?

Usually proof of the child's date of birth and the parents' identity. Karachi Grammar School's Nursery 2026 verification asked for the original birth certificate (not a recent one), the original B-Form and both parents' CNICs. The City School asks for an attested copy of the birth certificate and two photographs. Ask each school for its list.

What should a child be able to do before nursery?

No school we checked publishes a nursery readiness list. As a guide, the US CDC says most children can, by age four, speak in sentences of four or more words, name a few colours, pretend during play and hold a crayon between fingers and thumb. A three-year-old starting Nursery is still working towards these.
