School Admissions in Islamabad: When to Apply, Documents, Tests and Open Days

Admissions in Islamabad do not follow one calendar. Schools run by the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) have run one admission drive a year, a few private schools say they register children at any time of year, and others publish nothing about dates at all. On 30 October 2026 SchoolNama held 2,758 Islamabad campus records, and none of them carries an admission date we have confirmed with the school; almost every record tells parents to contact the campus, and the few sample profiles that show admission notes have not been checked against the schools' own notices, so we have not used them. Every date below comes instead from a page, PDF or notice we opened on 30 October 2026.

Which Islamabad schools have admissions open? The clearest dated window we found belongs to Daanish School Kurri, the federal government's residential school in Islamabad, whose advertisement lists education, boarding, meals, uniforms and books among the facilities it provides free. The Daanish Schools Authority's 2027 advertisement says the Kurri campus is taking Class 6 only (its Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir campuses also take Classes 7 and 8). Forms became available on 19 October 2026, the last date to submit them is 12 November 2026, and the entrance test is on Saturday 12 December 2026. The school is meant for children from poor families: the advertisement lists conditions such as a monthly household income below Rs 40,000, and says selection runs through a written test, an interview, a medical check and verification of the family, with no recommendations accepted. Age is counted on 31 March 2027, and for Class 6 boys must be 10 to 12 and girls 10 to 13. The online form, which labels the intake the 2027-28 session, also shows a self-finance route, for which the form says the eligibility categories are not required. Demand is heavy: Dawn reported on 9 March 2026 that the newly opened school drew more than 7,000 applications for 210 seats in its first intake for Classes 6 to 8.

Several private schools describe their registration as continuous. Roots International Schools and Colleges says its campuses accept students from March through August, that the whole academic year is open for registration, and that its session starts in August or September. The International School of Islamabad (ISOI) in H-9/1 says applications are accepted throughout the school year, though some grades sometimes have a waiting list. The City School's admissions page says registrations are open throughout the year but that registering does not guarantee a seat. The Educators Capital Campus in G-11/1 lists its admissions for the 2026-27 session as open, with limited seats and test dates set by the school. Headstart School runs an online form headed Admission Open, covering Playgroup to Grade 12, and Froebel's International School's site carries a register-for-admission form, but neither page we opened gave a date, a deadline or a session.

Government model schools are the other big route, and their timing is different. The FDE's own admission notice for the 2025-26 session, the latest official schedule we could open, ran registration for ECE-I, ECE-II (Prep) and Classes I to IX from 17 to 28 March 2025, with an ECE-I interview from 17 March, a Class VI test on 7 April, tests for ECE-II on 8 April and for Class I and the other classes on 9 April, merit lists on 14 April and classes from 17 April 2025. For 2026-27 the FDE moved to an online portal, which ProPakistani reported on 28 April 2026; the portal says tuition is free from ECE to Class X and lists 30 June 2026 as the closing date for 2026-27 applications, although on 30 October 2026 it still displayed an admissions-open banner, so check with the school before assuming either way. We found no FDE notice for 2027-28 on the directorate's site or portal, so we cannot give a date; the pattern so far suggests watching the FDE site from the start of the calendar year. Admission to Class XI is handled separately once SSC results are out: ProPakistani reported on 30 July 2026 that online registration for HSSC-I at Islamabad Model Colleges ran from 30 July to 5 August 2026, and the FDE's HSSC page now shows applications closing on 9 August, a first merit list on 20 August and classes from 27 August 2026.

When should parents apply? Start early in the year before the session you want, and read each school's own calendar. FDE's last dated PDF schedule, for 2025-26, opened registration in mid-March 2025 and its 2026-27 online round followed in late April 2026, Roots begins taking students in March for a session that starts in August or September, Daanish School's 2027 forms opened in October, and ISOI, The City School and Roots say they will register at other times too. Eligibility rules can matter as much as dates. The FDE's 2025-26 notice limited admission to residents of Islamabad Capital Territory and to federal government employees living in Islamabad or Rawalpindi, and set ages, counted on 31 March 2025, of 3 to 4 years for ECE-I, 4 to 5 for ECE-II/Prep and 5 to 6 for Class I, with three months' relaxation in the upper limit. ISOI's Pre-Kindergarten wants a child who is 2 by 1 August for the first semester or 3 by 1 January for the second. Are tests and interviews common? Yes. Every Islamabad school whose pages described a process used a test, an interview or both. The FDE's 2025-26 schedule set an interview for ECE-I and written admission tests from ECE-II/Prep upwards, then ranked children on merit lists. The City School assesses Playgroup and Kindergarten children on things such as vocabulary, colours, numbers, spoken English and motor skills; from Class I it sets a 30-minute written test in English, Urdu and Mathematics with a 50% pass mark, and it schedules an interview with both parents. Roots International says junior and higher school applicants must take an admissions test. The Educators Capital Campus holds an oral and a written test, requires the child to clear the written test before the interview (pre-school children skip it), and interviews both child and parents. ISOI says every applicant is assessed, and the FDE's HSSC page says shortlisted Class XI applicants must bring original documents and their real parents to the interview. What documents will you need? The core set is the same almost everywhere: the child's birth certificate or NADRA B-Form, the parents' CNICs, photographs and the last school's records. The FDE's 2025-26 notice asked for attested copies of the parents' CNICs, a service certificate for government employees, proof of residence such as a house allotment, rent agreement or utility bills, the previous class's result card, and, for children coming from a private school, a school leaving certificate verified by the private schools' regulator. Roots International asks for the original school leaving certificate, copies of the provisional and character certificates, the last report card, two passport-size photographs, an attested copy of the birth certificate or B-Form and a copy of the father's or guardian's CNIC. Daanish School's online form asks for the child's photograph and B-Form and both sides of the father's and mother's CNICs, plus a death, disability or divorce certificate where a special category applies. Where can parents find open days? We found no dated open day for the 2027-28 intake on any Islamabad school page we read on 30 October 2026, and SchoolNama's events file holds no confirmed Islamabad open day. Visits are arranged on request instead: ISOI's registrar books campus tours by appointment and also offers online meetings, The City School's admissions page links to a tour-booking page, and The Educators Capital Campus invites parents for admission counselling. Ask for a visit before a school's window opens rather than after.

Because seats are limited at many schools, apply to more than one and keep every test and result date in one calendar.
