Changing Schools Mid-Year in Pakistan: A Practical Guide for Parents
Moving a child in the middle of the session is possible, but the leaving certificate, a free seat, board registration and the money all have to line up. We read the regulators', boards' and schools' own rules on 30 October 2026 to show what is actually written down and what you will have to ask.
Short answer
Yes, but it takes more planning than a move at the start of a session. Get a school leaving certificate from the current school, which often means clearing dues first, and confirm the new school has a seat in your child's class. From Class IX onwards, the exam board's transfer rules also apply. Check curriculum, fees and transport before you give notice.
How we researched this: On 30 October 2026 we read the Islamabad regulator PEIRA's 11 May 2023 notification on school leaving certificates, the Punjab Free and Compulsory Education Rules 2024 as published in the Punjab Gazette on 10 February 2025, the Federal Board's (FBISE) HSSC registration notification for session 2026-28 dated 7 July 2026, BISE Peshawar's migration FAQ, and the admission pages of The City School, Karachi Grammar School, Habib Girls School, Mama Parsi Girls' Secondary School, The Punjab School, Bay View Academy and OPF Public School Sialkot. For provincial fee rules we could not open an official consolidated text, so we rely on press reports (Dawn on Punjab's 2015 amendment ordinance, ProPakistani on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2021 and Sindh in July 2026) and say so where we use them. PEIRA's fee determination policy and its guidelines for schools would not open as readable text, the Sindh directorate's site had an expired security certificate, and two OPF fee pages refused our request. We did not find any school page that published a withdrawal notice period. SchoolNama's campus count comes from a script run the same day.
Can you change your child's school in the middle of the year? Yes. Nothing we read bans a mid-session move, and at least one large chain, The City School, registers applicants all year. But a mid-year move depends on four things lining up at once: the old school releasing your child's records, the new school having a seat in the right class, the exam board accepting the transfer if your child is in Class IX or above, and the money working out on both sides. This guide takes them one at a time, using only rules and policies we could open on 30 October 2026.
Start with the school leaving certificate, because the new school may not admit your child without it. In Islamabad Capital Territory this is a written rule. PEIRA, the regulator of private schools in ICT, issued a notification on 11 May 2023 directing that no private school may grant admission without a school leaving certificate from the student's previous school, and that new admissions may be granted on that certificate only. The notification describes the certificate as one issued by the previous school based on clearance of all dues, and says admitting children without it may encourage families to leave without paying. It does not apply to children who were never enrolled in a school, or to non-profit schools enrolling out-of-school children. In practice, if you are moving within Islamabad, settle the old school's account before you expect the certificate.
Punjab's rules give the child a right with a deadline attached. The Punjab Free and Compulsory Education Rules 2024, notified by the School Education Department on 28 January 2025 and published in the Punjab Gazette on 10 February 2025, say that when a child is required to move from one school to another, within the neighbourhood or otherwise, the child has the right to seek admission to any other public or aided private school, to get a school leaving certificate immediately and in any case within three working days from the school being left, and to get admission free of cost; the child may instead opt for an unaided private school. The rules are written around free education in government and aided schools, so if you are leaving a fee-charging private school, ask the school in writing when it will issue the certificate rather than assume the three-day limit applies. The same rules set the academic year from 1 April to 31 March and the admission period, from nursery to Class 10, from 1 April to 31 October, and say a child shall be admitted during the notified admission period. If you are moving a child into a government school in Punjab after that period, ask the school or the district education authority whether the transfer will be accepted.
Next, find out whether the new school takes children mid-session at all. Policies differ sharply. The City School says registration is open throughout the year, but adds that registration does not confirm or guarantee admission; for Class I and above it sets a 30-minute test in English, Urdu and Mathematics with a 50% pass mark. Karachi Grammar School's admissions page, still showing its notice for the 2025 admission cycle, says there is no waiting list and no provision for late admissions. Some schools only fill places that fall vacant: Mama Parsi Girls' Secondary School invites Class II-onwards applications in the last week of April and gives a test date only if a vacancy arises, and The Punjab School says admission to Classes II to IX depends on seats being available. Habib Girls School in Karachi takes lateral applications for Grades 3 to 9, but its current window, online from 15 October 2026 to 3 April 2027, is for the 2027-28 session, with a Rs 3,000 non-refundable online fee; the page still shows some older 2026-27 dates, so confirm with the school. A lateral admission, in other words, often means a place next session, not next week. Moving between branches of the same chain is not automatic either: Bay View Academy's senior section says that once an offer is made, no requests to transfer between campuses will be entertained.
Gather the paperwork early. The City School asks transfer students for the last school's report card and photocopies of the provisional certificate and character certificate from the last institution. The Punjab School asks a migrating student for a transfer certificate, the last progress report and a receipt showing the school fee was paid. Add the usual admission documents, such as the birth certificate or NADRA B-form, photographs and parents' CNICs; our checklist at /news/school-admission-documents-pakistan sets out what different schools ask for.
From Class IX onwards, the board matters as much as the school. Matric students are registered with a board, and a move to a school under a different board, or a switch from O Levels to the intermediate system, needs the board's paperwork. The clearest written rules we found are for Class XI at the Federal Board. FBISE's HSSC registration notification for Class XI, session 2026-28, dated 7 July 2026, says general Class XI admission remained open until 31 August 2026, with late admission only by the Chairman's special permission up to 30 September 2026; board-to-board transfers follow a separate rule. It allows admission on a board-to-board transfer within 30 days of the student's withdrawal from the previous institution, subject to eligibility decided by the Board, and requires the new institution to register the student with FBISE within 15 days of admission. The normal-fee deadline for Class XI registration returns was 6 October 2026, at Rs 1,500 per candidate inland; for transfers from other boards after that date, the fee becomes Rs 1,500 plus Rs 1,500 per month per candidate, and part of a month counts as a full month. The return must carry the original NOC or migration certificate, the SSC result card and a leaving certificate attested by the principal, and, where applicable, an IBCC equivalence certificate. A transferred student is treated as a fresh candidate and gets a new FBISE registration number, such cases are entertained only up to 15 days after the examination admission-form schedule is announced, and a student who passed O Levels or an equivalent exam is to be admitted within 30 days of the result. Other boards run their own rules: BISE Peshawar's FAQ says school-to-school migration is allowed on the institution's request, for a convincing reason, with the consent of both heads, through its online portal until 30 October of the academic year (for 2026, that date has now been reached). We did not find an equivalent published rule for moving a Class IX or X student under FBISE, so ask the board directly. If your child is in Class IX to XII, ask both schools which board each is registered with and who will file the migration before you withdraw.
Curriculum gaps are easy to underestimate. A child moving between the Matric and Cambridge streams, between provincial boards, or between schools that use different textbook series may find that topics were taught in a different order, that a language or subject is assessed differently, or that a whole subject is new. Ask the new school for its scheme of work for the rest of the term, compare it with your child's notebooks, and list the topics your child has not covered. A few weeks of focused help before or after the move is usually cheaper than a failed term. If you are weighing a change of stream rather than only a change of school, read /news/o-level-vs-matric-how-to-decide-in-grade-8 and /news/cambridge-vs-fbise first, since the board deadlines above make a stream switch harder the later it happens.
Then work out the money on both sides. On the leaving side, the main questions are unpaid dues, any fee already paid in advance and the security deposit. The City School says its admission fee is non-refundable and its security fee is refundable at the time of withdrawal, and OPF Public School Sialkot describes its security deposit as a one-time refundable amount returned on leaving, under OPF policy. None of the school pages we read published a withdrawal notice period, so ask the current school in writing how much notice it requires, whether a month's fee is charged in lieu of notice, and how long the security refund takes. On the joining side, expect a registration fee (The City School puts its own at normally Rs 600 to Rs 1,000, varying by campus) and admission and security charges. Provincial rules on these charges exist but are hard to find in official form. Dawn reported in September 2015 that Punjab's amendment ordinance capped the admission fee or the security at one month's tuition; ProPakistani reported in December 2021 that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Private Schools Regulatory Authority, citing a Peshawar High Court decision, said charging admission or annual fees would be a violation; and ProPakistani reported in July 2026 that Sindh's private-institutions directorate told schools that charging any fee other than the approved tuition fee without prior approval is a violation. These reports are old or secondary and the rules may have changed since, so ask the regulator in your province what applies before you pay a large one-time charge. Our city fee guides, such as /news/school-fees-in-lahore and /news/school-fees-in-karachi, help you budget the new school.
Plan the social side and the commute too. A child joining mid-year arrives after friendships and class routines have formed, so ask the new school whether it assigns a buddy or class mentor, whether your child can visit before the first day, and how the teacher will be told about any learning gaps. Keep the old routine where you can, such as tuition or a sport, through the first weeks. Transport is a practical deal-breaker: a longer drive changes your child's day, and school vans and pick-and-drop services usually run fixed routes, so confirm a seat on a route before you commit. Our van safety checklist (/news/how-to-choose-a-school-van-safety-checklist) can help, but check any provider yourself.
SchoolNama can help you shortlist, not settle the details. On 30 October 2026 we held 6,666 campus records across our 15 launch cities, but they carry at most an admissions open or closed flag and a short note, not class-by-class vacancies, so build a shortlist on /schools or your city page, such as /lahore, /karachi or /islamabad, compare finalists on /compare, and then ask each school directly. If the answer is no seat until next session, our guides to timing (/news/best-time-to-apply-school-admission-pakistan), waiting lists (/news/school-waiting-list-pakistan) and admission tests (/news/school-admission-test-preparation) cover the next steps.

Checklist before you decide
- ✓Ask the new school, in writing, whether it has a seat in your child's class now, and whether there is a test or interview.
- ✓Ask the current school how much notice it requires, whether it charges a month's fee in lieu of notice, and how long the security refund takes.
- ✓Clear all dues and keep the receipts; PEIRA ties the leaving certificate to clearance of dues, and The Punjab School asks for a fee receipt.
- ✓Request the school leaving or transfer certificate, the latest report card and any provisional or character certificate the new school wants.
- ✓Have proof of age ready (birth certificate and NADRA B-form), photographs and both parents' CNICs.
- ✓In Class IX to XII, confirm which board each school uses and who will file the migration certificate or NOC; for Class XI under FBISE, note the 30-day and 15-day limits and the monthly late fee on transfer cases.
- ✓Moving from O Levels to an intermediate college: check whether an IBCC equivalence certificate is needed and apply early.
- ✓Compare the new school's scheme of work with your child's notebooks and plan help for any missed topics.
- ✓Ask what the new school charges up front (registration, admission, security, advance tuition) and check your province's rules before paying.
- ✓Confirm a transport seat on a route before the first day, and ask whether the school assigns a buddy or mentor to new joiners.
- ✓If no seat is available, apply for next session and keep your child settled where they are.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my child's school in the middle of the year?
Yes, if the new school has a seat and you can get a leaving certificate from the old one. At least one large chain, The City School, registers applicants all year, while Karachi Grammar School's admissions page, still showing its 2025-cycle notice, says it has no provision for late admissions. From Class IX onwards, board transfer rules and deadlines also apply.
Can a school refuse to give a school leaving certificate?
In Islamabad, PEIRA's May 2023 notification describes the certificate as issued on clearance of all dues, so unpaid fees can hold it up. In Punjab, the Free and Compulsory Education Rules 2024 give a child moving schools the right to the certificate immediately, and in any case within three working days, though those rules are framed around public and aided schools. If you are stuck, contact your provincial regulator.
Will I get my security deposit back?
Usually it is refundable, but check the terms. The City School says its security fee is refundable at withdrawal and its admission fee is not; OPF Public School Sialkot says its security deposit is refunded on leaving. Ask the school how much notice it needs and how long the refund takes.
What if my child is in Class XI?
Then the board is involved. Under FBISE's Class XI notification for session 2026-28, a board-to-board transfer must be admitted within 30 days of withdrawal and registered within 15 days of admission, and transfer cases after 6 October 2026 pay Rs 1,500 plus Rs 1,500 per month. BISE Peshawar allows school-to-school migration through its portal until 30 October of the academic year, a date that has now been reached for 2026. For Class IX or X, ask your board for its own transfer rules.
Is it better to wait for the new session?
Often, unless the move is forced by a relocation or a real problem at the current school. Several schools fill places mainly for the next session or only when a vacancy arises, and switching streams or boards gets harder later in the year. If you wait, apply early for the next session.
Can SchoolNama tell me which schools have mid-year seats?
Not yet. Our 6,666 campus records across 15 cities carry at most an admissions open or closed flag and a short note, not class-by-class vacancies, so shortlist on SchoolNama and then ask each school directly.
