O Level or Matric? How to decide by Grade 8

The choice is less about prestige than about what your child will do at 18. A practical walkthrough for families in the twin cities.

By the end of Grade 8 most schools in Islamabad and Rawalpindi ask you to choose a stream. Parents often treat this as a status question. It is better treated as a planning question about university.

If the likely path is a Pakistani public university via entry tests — medical, engineering, or civil service — the Matric and FSc route is cheaper, the syllabus aligns with the tests, and equivalence hassles disappear.

If the likely path includes universities abroad, or Pakistani private universities that weight Cambridge grades, O Levels give a clearer run, at roughly 1.5–2× the fee and with the added cost of exam entries and tuition.

Several networks in the twin cities offer both streams under one roof, which keeps the choice open a little longer. We flag those campuses in discovery with a 'Both streams' filter.
