When Should You Apply for School Admission in Pakistan?
Private schools in Pakistan close their main intake months before the first day of class, and they do not all run on the same calendar. We read the published timelines of ten schools plus government admission notices from Islamabad's FDE, an APP report on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's enrolment campaign and news reports on the Punjab and Sindh school years, to show when parents actually need to act for 2027 entry.
Short answer
Start in the autumn before your child's first school year, which for 2027 entry means now. Among schools we checked, Dawood Public School takes 2027-28 registrations from 1 to 30 November 2026, Lawrence College wants applications to arrive before 12 November 2026, and Aitchison's day-boy forms are due by 30 November 2026. Islamabad's federal model schools took 2025 forms only weeks before an April start. Verify each campus.
How we researched this: On 27 October 2026 we read the admission pages or notices of Dawood Public School (Karachi, session 2027-28), Lawrence College Ghora Gali (session 2027), Aitchison College (2027-28 application form), Habib Public School (Class 1, session 2027-28), Habib Girls School (2026-27 lateral admissions), Karachi Grammar School (its admissions page and its 2026 Nursery notices), The City School, The Punjab School (2026-27 page), Sadiq Public School, and the Agricultural University Public School and College in Peshawar (2026-27 notice). For government schools we read the Federal Directorate of Education's 2025-26 admission notice and its 2026-27 portal notice, an APP report on that portal (28 April 2026), an APP report on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's 2026-27 enrolment campaign (6 March 2026), ProPakistani reports on the 2026 session start in Punjab (23 November 2025) and Sindh (28 February 2026), Dawn (31 March 2026), the Express Tribune (31 July 2026) and Daily Ausaf (1 August 2026) on Sindh's school year; we did not find the provincial notifications themselves, and the Sindh reports conflict. Our own figures were produced that day by a script that reads all 6,666 campus records SchoolNama holds. Pages without a stated date are labelled as such.
The short answer is to begin in the autumn of the year before your child starts. For 2027 entry, the private-school closing dates we found sit in November and December 2026: before 12 November at Lawrence College, 30 November at Dawood Public School and for Aitchison day boys, and 31 December for Aitchison boarders. What happens next varies by school; Lawrence, for one, sets its test for 15 November and expects to announce results in December 2026. At the schools we checked, the months that matter for a 2027 start run from November 2026 into early 2027, not the weeks just before the session. Government schools are the exception: Islamabad's federal schools took registration forms for just 12 days in March 2025, a few weeks before their April start, so applying very early buys little there.
The first thing to settle is which calendar your target school follows, because Pakistan runs two. The City School places a child by age on 31 July where a branch begins its year in August, and by age on 28 February where the year begins in March or April, so even one network can run both calendars. Government schools in Punjab and Sindh were reported to be starting their year in spring in 2026, but the reports do not agree. ProPakistani wrote on 23 November 2025 that Punjab's new academic year was set to begin on 1 April 2026, and Dawn reported on 31 March 2026 that Sindh's education minister said the new academic year would resume from 1 April. Yet two later pieces, in the Express Tribune (31 July 2026) and Daily Ausaf (1 August 2026), treated the post-vacation reopening on 1 August 2026 as the moment Sindh's 2026-27 year began. We could not open an official provincial notification that settles the 2027-28 start, so check your province's current notice before relying on either month. Check the session start and the age cut-off together. SchoolNama has a separate age guide for each early entry point, linked in the checklist below.
Spring-session private schools close early. Lawrence College at Ghora Gali, near Murree, says its 2027 session begins in the first week of March 2027; applications for Class I and for Classes II to VIII, as seats are available, must arrive by post or courier before 12 November 2026, the written test is on 15 November 2026 and results are due in December 2026. That is roughly sixteen weeks between the application cut-off and the first day. The Punjab School describes a similar annual rhythm without fixed dates: Nursery registration opens in December, the Nursery test is in January and Nursery classes start in the first week of March, while Prep and Class I sit written tests in mid-February and tests for Classes II to IX are usually held then too.
Take Karachi Grammar School, which describes its year as opening in August 2026. Its Nursery candidates for that year had papers checked in the week of 9 to 14 February 2026, and the successful ones picked up their offers on 7 May 2026, roughly three months before term. For lateral places from KG to Grade 7 in 2026-27, Habib Girls School in Karachi kept its online portal open between 15 November 2025 and 16 January 2026, then tested candidates in April 2026. Several private schools have already published 2027-28 details, although the pages we read do not say in which month classes begin. Habib Public School has posted its Class 1 campaign for boys, open to children born between 1 February 2021 and 31 January 2022 with age measured on 1 August 2027, though the page we read gives no closing date. Dawood Public School in Karachi says online registration for 2027-28 runs from 1 to 30 November 2026, with limited seats in Classes I to IX. Aitchison College in Lahore wants its 2027-28 form couriered so it lands by 5 pm on 30 November 2026 if the boy would attend as a day student, or by 31 December 2026 if he would board. Note one boarding rule on that form: a boy who has studied in Lahore for over six months is ineligible to apply for a boarding place.
Government schools work on a much shorter clock. In its 2025-26 notice, the Federal Directorate of Education gave Islamabad Model Schools and Colleges a registration window of 17 to 28 March 2025, posted merit lists on 14 April 2025 and started classes on 17 April 2025, about a month from first form to first lesson. Places in Classes II to IX depended on seats in each institution. For 2026-27, FDE moved admissions to an online portal; APP reported on 28 April 2026 that the portal shows real-time seat availability, and FDE's own notice page gives no closing date. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, APP reported on 6 March 2026 that the provincial government had launched a 2026-27 enrolment campaign aiming to enrol 1,328,620 children. One university-run school we checked kept a similarly short clock: the Agricultural University Public School and College in Peshawar sold 2026-27 forms from 20 February 2026, closed them on 12 March 2026, tested on 16 March and announced results on 26 March 2026.
Meeting a deadline earns a chance at a seat, not the seat itself, and missing one can end your chances for that year. The City School, Aitchison and The Punjab School each state that registration or an application does not secure admission. KGS is blunt about this: the notice still on its admissions page, written when its 2025 admissions closed, says families should not expect a waiting list or any late entry. Entry above the usual intake classes depends on vacancies: The Punjab School says it normally does not admit students to Class IX, and Sadiq Public School says it normally does not admit students to final or outgoing classes, with exceptions, decided by the Principal, that depend on vacancies, outstanding merit or unusual circumstances. Early application also has a cost. The application or registration fees in these notices are marked non-refundable: Rs 60,000 for an Aitchison day-boy application and Rs 30,000 for boarding, Rs 5,000 at Lawrence College, and Rs 3,000 each at Habib Public School and for Habib Girls School's online lateral registration. Applying to every school on a long list can therefore cost more than parents expect.
Transfers and mid-year moves follow different rules from the main intake. The City School says registrations are open throughout the year, although a place still depends on its admission test and interview. At Lawrence College, a casual vacancy that opens during the year is dealt with each March. If you are moving a child between schools, ask three questions before you withdraw: whether the new school has a seat in that class now, when its next intake is, and what paperwork it needs from the old school. Our admission documents guide (/news/school-admission-documents-pakistan) covers leaving certificates and the other papers a transfer usually requires.
SchoolNama cannot yet tell you a school's admission window. When we ran our script on 27 October 2026, 6,652 of our 6,666 campus records carried only a note asking parents to contact the school about admissions, and we hold no admission deadline we have verified with a school. Browse /schools or a city page (/karachi, /lahore and /islamabad are examples) to draw up names, weigh the final few on /compare, then ask each school to confirm its closing date in writing. Profiles such as /schools/aitchison-college-lahore, /schools/habib-public-school-karachi and /schools/the-punjab-school-lahore are a starting point, not a substitute for the school's own notice. If an entrance test is part of the process, our test preparation guide (/news/school-admission-test-preparation) and parent interview guide (/news/school-parent-interview-questions-pakistan) can help you plan the months between registration and the test.

Checklist before you decide
- ✓Find out whether each school on your list starts its session in August or in March or April; that decides both its deadlines and its age cut-off date.
- ✓For 2027 entry to a private school, contact your shortlisted schools in November 2026; several main-intake windows we read fall in November and December 2026.
- ✓Write down each school's exact closing date and how forms must be sent (online portal, post, courier or in person), and allow time for courier delivery.
- ✓Ask whether the school keeps a waiting list and whether it accepts late or mid-year applications; do not assume either.
- ✓Budget for non-refundable registration or application fees, which ranged from Rs 3,000 to Rs 60,000 in the school notices we read (the Peshawar school sold forms for Rs 600), before applying widely.
- ✓Work out how old your child will be on whichever cut-off day a given campus uses. Before entering a first school, a toddler's eligibility window is mapped at /news/playgroup-age-pakistan. The following step up is explained, with its own cut-offs, at /news/nursery-age-pakistan. Whether your child is ready to leave the early years for formal primary lessons is weighed up in our guide at /news/class-1-admission-age-pakistan.
- ✓For government schools, watch the official notice or portal in early spring, since FDE's 2025-26 registration window lasted only 12 days.
- ✓If you are transferring mid-year, confirm a seat in writing before you withdraw your child and request the leaving certificate.
- ✓Plan the gap between registration and the entrance test, and gather documents early using our admission documents guide.
Frequently asked questions
How early should parents apply to private schools in Pakistan?
In the autumn before the year of entry. For 2027 entry, Dawood Public School's online registration runs from 1 to 30 November 2026, Lawrence College's applications must arrive before 12 November 2026 for a session beginning in March 2027, and Aitchison's day-boy forms are due by 5 pm on 30 November 2026. Dates differ by school, so confirm them with every campus on your list.
Do Pakistani schools start in March, April or August?
Both patterns exist. For government schools the 2026 picture was mixed: Punjab's year was reported as starting on 1 April 2026, and Sindh's was described as starting on 1 April by its minister in March 2026 but as starting on 1 August in some July and August reports. As of 27 October 2026 we had not found an official 2027-28 notification for either province, so check the current one. In the private sector, Lawrence College opens its 2027 year in early March, whereas KGS describes its year as starting in August. The City School uses different age cut-off dates depending on whether a branch starts in August or in March or April.
Is it too late to apply if the deadline has passed?
Often, yes, for the main intake. KGS is blunt about this: the notice still on its admissions page, written when its 2025 admissions closed, says families should not expect a waiting list or any late entry. Some schools are more flexible: The City School says registrations are open throughout the year, though admission still depends on its test and interview. Ask the school whether a vacancy exists in your child's class.
Is a mid-year school move possible?
It depends on vacancies and the school's policy. Lawrence College deals with in-year casual vacancies each March, and The Punjab School and Sadiq Public School say entry into some higher or final classes is normally not offered unless a seat is available. Confirm a seat before withdrawing your child from their current school.
When do government schools take admissions?
Shortly before a spring start. For 2025-26, FDE accepted registration forms between 17 and 28 March 2025, and its Islamabad Model Schools and Colleges opened their classes on 17 April 2025. For 2026-27, FDE used an online portal whose notice page gives no closing date, so check the portal and the official notice each spring.
Does SchoolNama list admission deadlines?
Not yet. Of our 6,666 campus records, 6,652 only advise parents to contact the school about admissions, and we hold no deadline verified with a school. Use SchoolNama to shortlist and compare, then get dates from each school's own notice.
