School Fees in Karachi: Monthly, Admission and First-Year Cost Comparison
Karachi school costs run from free government places to fees billed in dollars and pounds, yet most mid-priced schools keep their rates offline. This hub sets out every official figure we could re-check, most of them for 2026-27, the gap in the middle, two worked first-year totals, and a worksheet you can reuse for any school on your shortlist.
Short answer
Official figures we checked span free government schooling, Rs 5,800 a month at Nasra School for 2026-27, an estimated PKR 440,000 to 1,074,500 a year before tax at The International School, and dollar or pound schedules at KAS and BOS. Most mid-priced schools publish nothing. Budget a full first year: tuition, admission, annual charges, deposits, books, uniform and transport.
How we researched this: On 7 October 2026 we re-opened the fee pages and PDFs published by Nasra School, Happy Palace Group of Schools, The International School, the British Overseas School and Karachi American School, the Sindh Act XIV of 2013, a TCF USA FAQ, the Habib Education Trust aid page, and Dawn, The Nation and ARY News reports on Sindh fee rules, and we looked for fees on the official sites of The City School, Karachi Public School, Foundation Public School and Habib Public School. The fee bands are SchoolNama's own grouping, every total was recalculated from the published figures, and fee lists on aggregator sites were not used.
Ask a Karachi parent what a school costs and you will usually hear one number: the monthly tuition. That figure leaves out the admission fee paid once at entry, the deposit you may or may not get back, yearly charges, books, uniform and the daily ride to school. This page is SchoolNama's hub for the whole Karachi price range. It groups the official figures we could re-check on 7 October 2026 into bands, says plainly where nothing is published, and shows how to turn any school's fee card into a first-year total. Our two narrower guides, /news/low-fee-schools-in-karachi and /news/most-expensive-schools-in-karachi, go deeper on each end of the market.
The cheapest route costs nothing by law. Sindh's 2013 free-education Act, section 3, entitles children from 5 to 16 to schooling without fees, and its definition of 'free' reaches books, stationery, bags and uniform too. Section 3(3) and section 10 push part of that duty onto private owners: a tenth of a school's roll must study free, and a tenth of seats in Class I upward must go to disadvantaged children. One step up is pay-what-you-can tuition. TCF's US affiliate, in an FAQ with no date on it, puts TCF's monthly charge anywhere from Rs 10 to Rs 250, with the principal fixing the amount after looking at the household's earnings and size. Among fee-charging private schools, Nasra School's 2026-27 schedule puts standard monthly tuition at Rs 5,800, noting it may vary slightly by campus and grade. Happy Palace Group of Schools lists Rs 8,750 to Rs 11,000 a month from Play Group to Matric, O Level and its AKU-EB stream, Rs 10,000 for Intermediate and Rs 22,000 for A Level, but calls these reference figures and names no session.
The middle of the market is where published numbers run out. On 7 October 2026 the official websites of The City School, Karachi Public School, Foundation Public School and Habib Public School showed no fee amounts; The City School's admissions page says parents receive a fee structure slip after paying the registration fee, and Foundation Public School takes applications through an online portal. SchoolNama's high-fee guide, published on 2 October 2026, likewise found no fees on the websites of Karachi Grammar School, The Lyceum, Bay View High School or Generation's School. Websites that print monthly fees for these schools are not the schools themselves, rarely give a date, and are not used here. So, apart from Happy Palace's undated A Level rate, SchoolNama cannot yet fill the band between roughly Rs 10,000 and Rs 30,000 a month with verified figures. If a school you like sits there, ask its office for the dated, approved fee schedule for your child's class before you pay even the registration fee.
At the top, three schools publish full 2026-27 schedules. The International School's budgeting sheet estimates an annual cost, excluding tax, of PKR 440,000 for Early Years/Playgroup rising to PKR 1,074,500 for the IB Diploma; its tuition line covers ten months, August to May, and new families also pay an admission fee of PKR 150,000 to 250,000 plus a PKR 25,000 deposit that is refundable under its payment terms. The British Overseas School invoices in pounds from Pre-Nursery upward (its two youngest groups are billed in rupees), payable in rupees: a gross annual total of £3,389 for Pre-Nursery up to £7,197 for Years 10 and 11, including a £261 security surcharge and 3% Sindh Revenue Board tax, plus a £1,546 entrance fee on first entry. Karachi American School lists total annual fees of $5,696 for K3 up to $17,134 for Grade 12, including 3% Sindh Sales Tax, and a one-time, non-refundable registration fee of $2,060 to $11,330 depending on grade. Fees set in foreign currency move with the exchange rate, so the rupee bill can change between instalments.
Books, uniform and transport are the lines that published fee cards most often leave blank. Happy Palace says transport, books, uniforms, examinations, laboratories and activities are not itemised on its published fee page, so ask whether they are charged on top, and Nasra's schedule gives no figures for them. The International School is the exception: it estimates textbooks at PKR 3,000 to 5,000 a year in the Primary Years Programme, PKR 20,000 to 40,000 in the Middle Years Programme and PKR 95,000 to 125,000 for the two Diploma years, and a uniform set at PKR 5,000 to 8,000, bought from its designated supplier. BOS takes a £300 book deposit from Year 6, which it refunds only after the pupil's final clearance. For families who cannot afford these items, the Habib Education Trust says it helps families with tuition and with school-related costs such as textbooks, uniforms, stationery and travel; its ACE programme, for children with no means to afford school, does not cover tuition. Transport has no official price we could cite. Our /pick-and-drop directory currently holds eight providers, all in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and none in Karachi. Until that changes, get a written monthly quote from the school's own van service or a private driver for your exact route, then multiply it by the months your child will ride.
Sindh's rules shape what a fee card may contain. The Supreme Court ruled on 12 June 2019 that private schools may raise tuition by five percent a year, upholding an earlier Sindh High Court order, and its detailed judgment that September, as Dawn reported, reset fees to January 2017 levels with any rise to be approved by regulators. In practice, according to an official quoted by Dawn on 10 July 2026, a Karachi school normally gets its 5% rise cleared by the provincial registration directorate at the point it renews its registration; the same report said the directorate ordered one primary school to refund at once the money from an increase it had not cleared, and to file a compliance report within 15 days. A circular the same month told schools to show the approved fee at reception and on the notice board and not to ask parents for hidden charges; ARY News and The Nation added that schools must hand parents a copy of the approved fee order on request. Earlier, in October 2024, ARY News quoted a directorate notification saying private schools may charge only admission and monthly tuition fees, though we could not confirm whether that notification is still in force, so if a card lists annual, development or other charges, ask whether the directorate approved them. Section 11 of the 2013 Act separately outlaws so-called capitation payments, any donation or contribution beyond the notified fee taken at admission, and makes a first offence punishable by a fine of up to 20 times the capitation fee charged. Two time-bound items have now passed: the 15-day window that unregistered schools were given in July 2026 to apply online, and the April 2026 guidance on collecting June and July fees in advance on separate monthly vouchers.
To compare schools fairly, build one first-year total for each and put the totals side by side. List every one-time charge separately from every recurring one, multiply monthly tuition by the number of months the school actually bills, add annual and exam charges, then add your own quotes for books, uniform and transport. Keep refundable deposits in a separate line, because you pay them now but may get them back. The worksheet below does this for a Nasra School Nursery pupil and a Primary Years pupil at The International School, using only their published 2026-27 figures. Shortlist schools near home from /karachi, open profiles such as /schools/nasra-school-karachi or /schools/the-international-school-karachi, and use /compare to set the finalists against each other once you have each school's written schedule.

Frequently asked questions
What are typical school fee bands in Karachi?
Going by the official figures we re-checked, the range starts at zero in government schools for 5 to 16 year olds. TCF's undated sliding scale is Rs 10 to 250 monthly. Nasra charges Rs 5,800 monthly in 2026-27, and Happy Palace quotes undated rates of Rs 8,750 to 11,000 below A Level. The top end is priced yearly: TIS PKR 440,000 to 1,074,500 before tax, BOS £3,389 to £7,197, KAS $5,696 to $17,134. The mid-priced chains we checked publish nothing.
Which one-time charges should I expect at admission?
Usually an admission or entrance fee, a form or registration fee and a deposit. Nasra lists Rs 10,000 admission, Rs 500 for the form and a refundable Rs 5,000 security deposit for 2026-27. TIS charges PKR 150,000 to 250,000 admission plus a PKR 25,000 deposit refundable under its payment terms, BOS a £1,546 entrance fee, and KAS a registration fee of $2,060 to $11,330.
How much do books and uniform add?
Few schools say. Of the schedules we read, only The International School gives estimates: PKR 3,000 to 5,000 for Primary Years textbooks and PKR 5,000 to 8,000 for one uniform set. Happy Palace says books and uniforms are not itemised on its fee page. Ask for your class's book list and uniform price before admission.
How does transport change the yearly cost?
It is a monthly cost that no school fee page we read priced, and SchoolNama does not yet list any Karachi pick-and-drop provider. Get a monthly quote for your route from the school's van service or a private driver and multiply it by the months you will use it.
How far may a Karachi private school lift its fees each year?
By no more than 5% a year, and only with approval. In 2019 the Supreme Court set 5% as the yearly ceiling, backing an earlier Sindh High Court order. Per Dawn in July 2026, the registration directorate usually clears that 5% when a school renews its registration, and it ordered one Karachi school to repay an increase it had not cleared. If your bill jumps, request the approval letter.
How do I compare the total yearly cost of two schools?
Use the worksheet on this page. Add billed months of tuition, every one-time fee, annual charges and exam fees, then your quotes for books, uniform and transport. Keep refundable deposits on a separate line and compare the totals, not the monthly tuition.
