Premium and High-Fee Schools in Karachi: What the Published Fees Actually Show

Most of Karachi's best-known high-fee schools keep their fee schedules offline. Three that publish 2026-27 figures, Karachi American School, the British Overseas School and The International School, price in dollars, pounds and rupees respectively. This guide sets out what each schedule bundles, what is charged on top, how Sindh limits increases, and how to judge whether the premium suits your child.

SchoolNama Editorial · 2 October 2026 · 10 min read

Short answer

We cannot name Karachi's single most expensive school, because most high-fee schools do not publish fees. Three that do have 2026-27 schedules online: Karachi American School lists annual totals of $5,696 to $17,134, the British Overseas School £3,389 to £7,197, and The International School estimates PKR 440,000 to 1,074,500 a year before tax. Ask every other school for its written, approved schedule.

How we researched this: On 2 October 2026 we read the fee and admissions pages of Karachi American School, the British Overseas School, The International School, Karachi Grammar School, The Lyceum, Bay View High School and Generation's School, plus Dawn reports on the Supreme Court's 2018-2019 fee rulings and Sindh's July 2026 fee warnings, and a ProPakistani report on the Sindh Ombudsman. Our Karachi record total was produced by a script run over SchoolNama's directory files. Aggregator fee lists were used only to find leads, never as sources, and we do not rank schools.

Parents searching for the most expensive schools in Karachi usually find lists that quote precise monthly fees for Karachi Grammar School, The Lyceum or Bay View with no date and no source. We tried to confirm those numbers at the schools themselves and could not: on 2 October 2026 none of those three websites showed a fee schedule. So this guide does not crown a most expensive school. It sets out the three high-fee schools whose own 2026-27 schedules we could read in full, explains which costs those schedules bundle and which they leave out, and lists the well-known names whose fees you will need to request in writing.

Karachi American School (KAS), on a campus of roughly 25 acres in KDA Scheme 1, prices everything in US dollars. Its tuition page for 2026-27 lists a total annual fee, including 3% Sindh Sales Tax, of $5,696 for K3, $5,892 for K4, $13,431 for Grades 1 to 4, $16,712 for Grades 6 and 7, $16,774 for Grades 9 to 11 and $17,134 for Grade 12, where a graduation fee is added. New students also pay a one-time registration fee that climbs with grade, from $2,060 at K3 to $11,330 at Grade 12, and a non-refundable application charge of $200 for elementary or $450 for middle and high school. Pakistani families may pay in rupees at the open-market selling rate on the payment day, so the rupee cost moves with the exchange rate.

The British Overseas School (BOS), on Khayaban-e-Hilal in DHA Phase 7, prices in British pounds for every class from Pre-Nursery upward, again payable in rupees on the day's rate. Its 2026-27 schedule gives a gross annual invoice, made up of tuition, a £261 security surcharge and 3% SRB tax, of £3,389 for Pre-Nursery, £4,505 for Nursery, £5,248 for Reception to Year 5, £5,428 for Year 6, £6,893 for Years 7 to 9 and £7,197 for Years 10 and 11. On top come a one-time entrance fee of £1,546, a registration fee of £50 or £150 depending on class, and a £300 book deposit from Year 6, the only item the school says it will refund, after final clearance. The two youngest groups, Small Wonder and Play Group, are billed in rupees. BOS's Key Stage 4 page describes Years 10 and 11 as the IGCSE years.

The International School (TIS), whose website gives its address as the Pakistan Railways Campus on DHA Link Road and calls it the first IB World continuum school in Pakistan, is the only one of the three that prices in rupees. Its sheet titled Costs, budgeting & finance 2026 - 2027 quotes every figure excluding tax and puts the estimated annual cost at PKR 440,000 for Early Years/Playgroup, 594,000 for Nursery and Pre-Kindergarten, 624,000 for Kindergarten, 792,500 for the Primary Years Programme, 864,500 for the Middle Years Programme and 1,074,500 for the Diploma. That estimate adds ten months of tuition (416,000 to 870,000) to campus security and, depending on stage, extracurricular, library and IT charges, plus an IB Development Fund of £320 from Nursery upward, converted at £1 = PKR 400 and adjusted when the exchange rate moves. Admission costs a further 175,000 to 275,000, of which 25,000 is a deposit refundable under the school's payment terms. IB assessment fees are extra in the final year of the MYP (£900) and the Diploma (£1,020), IGCSE assessment is billed separately, and the sheet estimates Diploma textbooks at 95,000 to 125,000, a figure it says covers both years of the programme. Families who pay the year's tuition in one instalment can claim a 5% rebate, and the sheet notes that the board revises fees every year.

What does the headline fee cover? KAS says its tuition and fees pay for basic textbooks, classroom and art supplies, laboratory and physical training equipment and part of school activities, but not after-hours use of recreational facilities. AP examinations are billed separately, late payment draws a 2% service charge plus tax for each month overdue, and the board may add a per-pupil charge if the school runs a deficit. Returning families pay 70% of the year's tuition by 15 June and the rest by 15 December, while pupils accepted after 15 June pay on acceptance. BOS splits its annual invoice into May, September and January instalments and states that fees are not refundable in any circumstances apart from the book deposit. Neither the KAS nor the BOS schedule lists transport, uniforms, meals or trips, so ask about each one before you sign.

The upfront bill is where high-fee schools differ most from mid-fee ones. Using only the published figures, a new KAS Grade 9 student's first year adds up to $27,524: the $450 application, the $10,300 registration fee and the $16,774 annual total. A new BOS Year 10 student's first year comes to £9,193: £150 registration, £1,546 entrance, the £300 refundable book deposit and the £7,197 annual invoice. A new TIS Diploma student's first year comes to PKR 1,349,500 before tax, made up of the 275,000 admission cost and the 1,074,500 annual estimate, with tax, the 12,000 internal examination fee, textbooks and uniform (estimated at 5,000 to 8,000 a set) still to add. KAS bills AP exams separately, and the BOS schedule does not say how IGCSE entries are charged, so ask.

Several well-known Karachi schools that are often listed among the city's high-fee options publish admissions information but no fee amounts. Karachi Grammar School's general admissions page still carried its notice about the 2025 cycle, while a separate A Level page sets out the 2026-27 admissions timeline; neither shows fee figures, and its policies page lists a scholarship and financial aid policy. The Lyceum's admissions page says applications for the 2026 to 2028 session are closed and that a need-based scholarship form is available from the principal's office after admission is confirmed. Bay View High School's FAQ asks parents to phone the campus admissions officer for the fee structure and says tuition discounts apply to the third and fourth sibling. Generation's School's 2026 admissions guide sets out merit scholarships for its A Level college linked to O Level grades and says they apply to monthly tuition only. We found no official, current fee schedule for Nixor College, The CAS School or the Aga Khan schools in Karachi; some of their websites would not load for us.

Whatever a school charges, Sindh's rules govern how fast it can rise. In September 2019 the Supreme Court's detailed judgment, as Dawn reported, froze private school fees at January 2017 levels until regulators approved any increase, with a ceiling of 5% a year, and its December 2018 interim order had cut fees by 20% at schools charging more than Rs 5,000 a month. Closer to home, Dawn's 10 July 2026 report described the provincial Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions directing Veritas Learning Circle to hand back fees raised without approval; a senior official told the paper that schools usually win a 5% increase at the point of renewing their registration. A circular sent to every school at the same time required the approved fee to be displayed at reception and on the notice board, and barred extra charges beyond it. Parents have also gone to the provincial ombudsman: ProPakistani reported on 22 August 2026 that the Sindh Ombudsman heard complaints about yearly fee rises, compulsory uniform changes and textbooks sold through designated vendors, and told the director general of private schools to submit a report. We could not open the directorate's own website on 2 October 2026, and we could not confirm how its approvals treat fees set in dollars or pounds.

Is the extra cost justified? The answer turns on your child and the qualification you are aiming for. KAS's fast facts describe an American college-preparatory programme with AP courses, a gymnasium, swimming pool, tennis and padel court, and accreditation from the Middle States Association; its Class of 2025 had 34 students. Its counselling department starts university planning in Grade 9. BOS organises its classes by UK key stages, ending with IGCSE in Years 10 and 11, and TIS teaches the IB Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes. Those features matter most for a family planning a university route abroad or expecting to move overseas. A child aiming for a Pakistani medical or engineering college through Matric or Intermediate, or one who thrives in a school nearer home, may gain little from paying the premium. A higher price does not prove better teaching, so judge each school on its exam route, class sizes, counselling and the commute.

SchoolNama's directory holds 1,534 Karachi school records, browsable from /karachi and the area pages /karachi/clifton and /karachi/dha, with profiles such as /schools/british-overseas-school-karachi and /schools/karachi-grammar-school-clifton-block-5-karachi. Our fees for these schools are still blank, because we only show a fee we can trace. Checklist before you decide

  • ✓Ask for the full fee schedule in writing for your child's class and session, not a figure read out on the phone.
  • ✓Confirm the quoted fee matches what the Sindh registration directorate approved; the approved figure should be posted at reception.
  • ✓Add every one-time charge (application, registration, entrance or admission, deposits) to the first-year total.
  • ✓Check which deposits are refundable and on what conditions; some premium schools refund nothing.
  • ✓For fees set in dollars or pounds, including sterling-linked items such as an IB fund, budget for exchange-rate movement between instalments.
  • ✓List what is excluded: transport, uniforms, meals, trips, board exam entries and AP or IGCSE fees.
  • ✓Find out last year's percentage increase and when parents are told about the next one.
  • ✓Ask about need-based aid, merit scholarships and sibling discounts before you apply, not after.
  • ✓Match the school's exam route (AP, IGCSE, A Level or Matric) to the university path your child is likely to take.

Frequently asked questions

Which schools are in Karachi's premium fee band?

Of the schools we checked, three publish full 2026-27 schedules: Karachi American School (annual totals $5,696 to $17,134), the British Overseas School (£3,389 to £7,197) and The International School (estimated PKR 440,000 to 1,074,500 a year, excluding tax). Karachi Grammar School, The Lyceum, Bay View and Generation's do not publish fees online, so we cannot place them in a band.

What is included in the fees at a premium school?

It varies. KAS says its fees cover basic textbooks, classroom and art supplies, lab and PE equipment and part of school activities. BOS's annual invoice is tuition plus a security surcharge and 3% SRB tax. TIS's estimate joins tuition to security and stage-based extracurricular, library and IT charges and an IB development fund. Get that list from every school you shortlist.

What extra charges should parents expect?

One-time charges are large: KAS registration runs up to $11,330, BOS charges a £1,546 entrance fee and TIS's admission cost is PKR 175,000 to 275,000 before tax. KAS bills AP exams separately and adds 2% a month plus tax on late fees, and TIS charges IB assessment in pounds in the final MYP and Diploma years. Neither the KAS nor the BOS schedule lists transport or uniforms.

What differentiates premium campuses?

Usually the exam route and university support rather than the building alone. KAS offers an American curriculum with AP courses and counselling from Grade 9 on a 25-acre campus with a pool and gymnasium; BOS follows UK key stages up to IGCSE; TIS runs the IB programmes from primary to Diploma. Visit, ask about class sizes and speak to current parents.

Is the extra cost justified for every child?

No. A foreign-curriculum premium school makes most sense for a family aiming at universities abroad or likely to relocate. For a child heading to Pakistani professional colleges, a well-run school on the local route may serve just as well for far less.

Is there a limit on how much a Karachi private school may increase its fees?

Yes. Increases need approval from Sindh's Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions, and the Supreme Court's 2019 judgment, as Dawn reported, capped rises at 5% a year subject to that approval. In July 2026 Dawn reported the directorate ordering a school to refund an unapproved rise. We could not confirm how this applies to fees set in dollars or pounds.
