Karachi Grammar School vs Bay View: Which Bay View, Which Entry Year, Which Campus

"Bay View" in Karachi can mean two separate schools with different founders and websites: Bay View Academy and Bay View High School. We read the official pages of all three, including KGS, on 14 October 2026 and set out entry years, test dates, sites, how far each one teaches and what none of them publishes, so you can compare on facts rather than reputation.

SchoolNama Editorial · 14 October 2026 · 11 min read

Short answer

Karachi has two separate Bay Views: Bay View Academy (BVA) and Bay View High School (BVHS), each with its own campuses and admissions. KGS teaches on three Karachi sites, from Early Years up to A Level. Both Bay Views finish at O Level in Class or Grade XI, so a sixth-form move follows. Compare entry years, test dates, campus location and A Level plans.

How we researched this: On 14 October 2026 we read kgs.edu.pk (about, history, section, curriculum, policy, scholarship and every 2026 admissions page we could find, including through the site's own page index), bva.edu.pk (history, campus, contact and admissions pages plus four of its current admissions PDFs) and bayviewhighschool.edu.pk (history, about, campus, admissions and FAQ pages plus several of its age-criteria and document PDFs, one of which is listed in the sources), and a July 2026 report in The News on Sindh's private-school regulator. A script counted SchoolNama's Karachi listings under each name. We rank none of the three, and we left out SchoolNama's seeded demo reviews.

Start with the name, because it causes real mix-ups. Bay View Academy (BVA, bva.edu.pk) was set up in August 1990 by Safia Shaikh and Shahpur Jamall and now has Defence, Clifton and PECHS campuses. Bay View High School (BVHS, bayviewhighschool.edu.pk) was founded in 1994 by Karen Ahmed and describes itself as a network of six campuses. As read on 14 October 2026, neither school's history page mentions the other, and each runs its own forms, tests and age rules. Before you compare either one with Karachi Grammar School, write down which Bay View you actually mean.

Karachi Grammar School traces its start to 1847, when Karachi's first chaplain opened a small school in his residence; according to its history page, the name Karachi Grammar School was adopted in 1879. The school says it is non-profit and entirely independent, takes no grant from government or anyone else, and is run by a Board of Governors registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860.

The KGS route crosses the city twice. Its about page puts the school on three sites: Early Years and the Junior Section (Nursery to Year VI) in Clifton, opened in 1991; the original Saddar building, a listed heritage site, for Years VII to IX; and the College Section in Clifton, opened in 1999, for Years X to XIII. So a child who joins in Early Years moves from Clifton to Saddar at Year VII and back to Clifton at Year X. The Middle Section page says the Saddar premises cover 3.56 acres and that Year VII is the year new pupils join children coming up from the Junior Section.

BVA runs three campuses. Its Defence campus page, for the site in Phase VIII, says it holds 1,100 students from Nursery to Class XI in two buildings, and the PECHS campus page gives over 609 students across the same range. The Clifton campus page still opens with a line about over 500 students from Nursery to Class VII and growth of one grade level a year, but further down it names staff for a Junior Section (Class IV to VIII) and a Senior Section (Class IX to XI), and BVA's 2026-27 inquiry form for Classes VII to XI includes a Clifton link. The pages give no date for any of these enrolment numbers, so treat them as indicative and check with the campus. BVA's Clifton contact page lists two addresses: Pre-Primary and Primary on Shahrah-e-Iran in Block 5, and Junior and Senior in Block 2.

BVHS is organised by stage. Its campus list shows pre-schools in Clifton and KDA (Playgroup to Prep II), junior campuses in Clifton and PECHS (Grades 1 to 5), a Senior Campus in Clifton for Grades 6 to 8, and the Senior Heritage Campus on Flench Street, Civil Lines, for Grades 6 to 11. The Clifton senior campus stops at Grade 8, so among the campuses BVHS lists, only the Civil Lines heritage campus covers Grades 9 to 11. BVHS's about page shows counters of 6 campuses, 2,000+ students and 7,000+ alumni, and its FAQ says most classes have about 22 to 25 students.

On curriculum, the main difference is how far each school goes. KGS's College Section prepares students for Cambridge (CAIE) O, AS and A Level examinations. Its O Level programme has six compulsory and four optional subjects, with Pakistan Studies sat at the end of Year X and the other eight at the end of Year XI. At A Level, students take four core subjects plus one elective, and the electives listed on its academics page, read on 14 October 2026, include Global Perspectives and Research, Thinking Skills, the Cambridge International Project Qualification, English General Paper and a Pearson Coding qualification. KGS says A Level entry is selective, and that current KGS students must apply for readmission to it.

Both Bay Views stop before A Level. BVA's history says the school grew to cover O Levels and, in August 2004, it helped found Southshore College, a separate A Level school, together with CAS and Froebels Education Center. BVHS says it teaches Cambridge IGCSE and GCE O Levels in Grades 9, 10 and 11 after a lower secondary phase in Grades 6 to 8. None of the pages we read on the three websites mention the IB. A Bay View family should expect to choose a sixth-form college for Class XII, while a KGS family applies again for its own A Level places.

KGS admissions run on a yearly cycle with fixed windows. For classes starting in August 2026, its pages show online A Level applications from candidates outside KGS closing on 31 January 2026, with verification and interviews for shortlisted applicants from 16 to 21 February 2026. Nursery document checks ran from 9 to 14 February 2026, and Year III interviews, verification and assessment ran from 16 to 24 February 2026. Nursery and Year III offer letters were due for collection on 7 May 2026 and Year X offers on 5 May 2026, and a list of successful Year VII candidates was also posted. On 14 October 2026 the general admissions page was unchanged from the 2025 round, and no KGS page we found set any date for entry in August 2027.

KGS is open about how competitive this is. Its A Level regulations say the school always has far more applicants than places and advise families to apply to other schools too. Its scholarships page says the school takes pride in a reputation for being highly selective, and adds that financial aid goes to students showing both academic promise and financial need. In at least one past cycle it limited applicants to fixed birth months; its 2023 Year 3 page, for example, said only children born in the listed months would be considered. When the 2027-28 notice appears, check the eligible birth months first.

BVA's next deadlines are much closer. For entry in August 2027, its first round for Class III, VII and X has registration on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 October 2026, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Defence Campus, where both parents must attend, and an admission test on Saturday 31 October 2026, also at Defence. The birth-date windows are 1 May 2019 to 30 April 2020 for Class III, 1 May 2015 to 30 April 2016 for Class VII, and 1 May 2012 to 30 April 2013 for Class X. Applicants who do well but are not picked in the first round go onto a waiting list for a second round. BVA's FAQs say about 10% to 12% of applicants are offered places in these entry classes. The same notice says the campus you prefer is treated as a priority, but places are assigned at the school's discretion depending on seats and siblings, and requests to transfer between campuses will not be entertained.

BVA's Playgroup intake for 2027-28 works differently. Rolling applications opened on Thursday 24 September 2026 at The Cove, D-100 Block 2 Clifton, with printed forms handed in at reception Monday to Thursday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. To apply, a child must be born between 1 May 2025 and 30 April 2026. There is a parent interview, which the child is expected to attend, and no formal assessment of the child.

BVHS publishes less in the way of fixed dates. Its FAQ says families apply online or at one chosen campus, the entrance test covers English, Mathematics and Urdu (Prep I and Prep II assess only English and Mathematics, then interview the parents), and shortlisted families hear back within 2 to 3 days. As of 14 October 2026, its news ticker advertises Pre-School admissions for 2027-28 for ages 1.7 to 5.3 years at the KDA and Clifton campuses, while the home page still says admissions are open for 2026-27 at all campuses, so confirm which session a form is for. The 2027-28 age-criteria PDF we opened for Junior Campus Clifton measures age as of July 2027.

On fees, none of the three schools publishes tuition. As of 14 October 2026, we found no tuition figures on any KGS, BVA or BVHS page or admissions PDF that we opened. BVHS's FAQ asks parents to call the campus Admissions Officer about the fee structure and says third and fourth siblings get tuition discounts. KGS asks A Level applicants for proof of a processing fee, but its page text does not give the amount. This guide does not repeat fee figures that appear only on third-party sites. In July 2026, The News reported that Sindh's private-schools directorate served notices on a Karachi school over tuition allegedly charged above the amount the registration authority had approved, so ask each school in writing for its approved fee schedule.

SchoolNama's own data gives you a place to start. A count of Karachi listings on 14 October 2026 found six whose names include Karachi Grammar School and five whose names include Bay View or Bayview. All are basic map-based profiles with no fee data. Four KGS listings sit in Clifton or Saddar, matching the school's stated sites, including karachi-grammar-school-junior-campus-karachi, karachi-grammar-school-middle-school-karachi and karachi-grammar-school-college-campus-karachi under /schools. The other two are in North Nazimabad, which is not one of KGS's three sites. The Bay View listings include bay-view-academy-karachi and bay-view-high-school-senior-heritage-campus-karachi. The heritage profile shows classes up to Matric, while the school's own page lists Grades 6 to 11 leading to IGCSE and O Level. Two other listings, Bay View Junior School and Bayview Junior School, do not show which of the two Bay Views they belong to, so check any listing's address against the school's own contact page. The Clifton and Saddar area pages under /karachi show nearby alternatives, and /compare puts shortlisted campuses side by side.

Getting to school matters more than any slogan. Map your home against the campus your child would be at for each stage, not just the first year: Clifton, then Saddar, then Clifton for KGS; Nursery to Class XI on one campus at BVA's Defence or PECHS sites, while BVA Clifton puts Pre-Primary and Primary in Block 5 and Junior and Senior in Block 2; and for BVHS in Clifton, Clifton up to Grade 8, after which the only BVHS campus listing Grades 9 to 11 is the Civil Lines heritage campus. SchoolNama has no Karachi pick-and-drop operators listed as of 14 October 2026, so transport is a question to put to each school. Families preparing for the October BVA test or the next KGS window can look for help on /tutors, and our Karachi fee guide at /news/school-fees-in-karachi explains how to read a fee schedule.

Checklist before you decide

  • ✓Decide which Bay View you mean, Bay View Academy (bva.edu.pk) or Bay View High School (bayviewhighschool.edu.pk), and use only that school's forms and dates.
  • ✓If you are considering BVA for Class III, VII or X in August 2027, check the birth-date window and bring every listed document for registration on 27 or 28 October 2026; both parents must attend.
  • ✓For KGS, watch kgs.edu.pk for the 2027-28 notice; its admissions page still shows the notice that sent parents to the site in December 2025 for the August 2026 intake, and nothing yet names a date for August 2027. Confirm the entry year and permitted birth months before anything else.
  • ✓Map the commute to every campus your child would attend through the years, not only the first one (for example Clifton, then Saddar, then Clifton at KGS).
  • ✓Ask both Bay Views which A Level college their students usually move to, and when those applications open.
  • ✓Ask each school for its current fee schedule in writing, including admission, security and annual charges, and whether it matches the fee approved by Sindh's registration authority.
  • ✓Ask about sibling policy: BVA says siblings get some preference but no guarantee, and BVHS offers tuition discounts for the third and fourth sibling.
  • ✓Ask how a campus is assigned and whether transfers are allowed later; BVA says it will not entertain transfer requests.
  • ✓Keep originals and copies of the birth certificate or B-Form, both parents' CNICs and recent report cards ready, since KGS and BVA verify original documents in person and BVHS holds its tests and interviews on campus.
  • ✓Shortlist at least one other school as well; BVA's first-round notice and KGS's A Level regulations both advise applying elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

KGS or Bay View: which is better?

SchoolNama does not rank them, and the three schools publish no shared measure to rank them by. The useful differences are structural: KGS teaches through A Level across three sites with a move to Saddar for Years VII to IX, while BVA and BVHS both end at O Level, so a sixth-form move is built in. Decide on your entry year, commute and A Level plans first.

Are Bay View Academy and Bay View High School the same school?

No. Bay View Academy was set up in 1990 and has Defence, Clifton and PECHS campuses; Bay View High School was founded in 1994 and lists six campuses in Clifton, KDA, PECHS and Civil Lines. They have separate websites, forms, tests and age rules.

When are the next admissions?

As of 14 October 2026, BVA's first round for Class III, VII and X (August 2027 entry) has registration on 27 and 28 October 2026 and a test on 31 October 2026 at its Defence Campus, and its Playgroup process has been rolling since 24 September 2026. BVHS advertises 2027-28 Pre-School admissions without a closing date. KGS has not posted 2027-28 dates; its 2026 applications, document checks and interviews ran in January and February 2026, with offer letters due for collection in May 2026.

What are the fees at KGS and Bay View?

None of the three publishes tuition on the pages we read as of 14 October 2026. BVHS asks parents to call the campus Admissions Officer. Get the current schedule in writing from the school rather than relying on figures posted elsewhere online.

Do KGS or the Bay Views offer A Levels or the IB?

KGS offers Cambridge AS and A Levels in its College Section, and outside candidates apply through a separate process. Neither Bay View teaches beyond Class or Grade XI. None of the three websites we read mentions the IB.

How hard is it to get in?

BVA's FAQs say roughly 10% to 12% of applicants are offered places in Class III and in Classes VII and X. KGS does not publish a rate, but its A Level regulations say it always has far more applicants than places. BVHS says shortlisting is done on a merit basis.
