Beaconhouse vs The City School: How Parents Can Compare Campus, Fees and Curriculum

Both networks teach to Cambridge O and A Level and offer Matric, but no two of their campuses are quite the same. We read both networks' own campus finders, admissions pages and Islamabad's fee register to show what to compare and what to check.

Short answer

Neither network is better across the board, because you are choosing a campus, not a brand. Beaconhouse and The City School both prepare students for Cambridge O and A Level and offer Matric, but fees, class ranges and programmes differ from campus to campus within each network. Compare the branches you can actually reach: their written fee schedules, the qualifications they offer and their recent results.

How we researched this: On 1 October 2026 we read the campus finders on beaconhouse.net and thecityschool.edu.pk for SchoolNama's 15 launch cities, both networks' admissions and curriculum pages, ICT-PEIRA's online fee register for Islamabad, and recent reports in Dawn and Pakistan Today. We also counted SchoolNama directory listings linked to each network. We did not rank the networks, and we did not use SchoolNama's unconfirmed fee figures or its demo reviews.

Parents often ask whether Beaconhouse or The City School is the better choice, as if each were a single school. Each is a large network of campuses, and the campuses differ. Some take children only up to Class 2 or Class 5. Some run Cambridge O Level, some Matric, some both, and only some go on to A Level. Fees are set and filed campus by campus. So the useful question is not which brand is better, but which of the campuses you can reach suits your child, at a price you can sustain. This guide sets out what each network publishes, where the two differ, and what to check before you pay an admission fee.

Both are long-established. Beaconhouse says it began as the Les Anges Montessori Academy, founded in Lahore in November 1975 with 19 children, and that it now educates around 400,000 students in six countries. The City School says it was established in Karachi in 1978 and has more than 500 schools and over 150,000 students, with schools in other countries as well. Those are the networks' own figures. They cover operations outside Pakistan, and they tell you nothing about the campus near your home.

Start with each network's own campus finder, read on 1 October 2026 for SchoolNama's 15 launch cities. The City School's directory listed 88 campuses across those cities. For 18 of them, the class range shown reaches A Level. Beaconhouse's campus finder listed 149 entries in the same cities, and it tags 22 of them as College Programme branches (the Beaconhouse College Programme, its A Level branches). The table below gives the city-by-city picture. The two sets of numbers cannot be compared directly. Beaconhouse often lists a kindergarten, a primary branch and a college branch in the same area as separate entries, and its programme tags are incomplete. The City School lists one campus per entry, with its class range. Neither finder is guaranteed to list every branch. Use the finders to see which campuses are near you and what classes each one covers, not to judge which network is bigger.

The curricula follow a similar shape, with differences in the detail. Beaconhouse says its students follow its in-house curriculum up to Class VIII, after which most take Cambridge O Level. Its O Level page says most students take seven to ten subjects over two to three years, and that only a few of its schools offer IGCSE. Beaconhouse also runs Matric, which it describes as a two-year programme ending in the Class X examination, set and administered by the federal and provincial boards. The City School says its curriculum is derived from the UK national curriculum and takes students from nursery to Cambridge IGCSE, O Level and A Level. Its website also lists Matriculation and HSSC. Its admissions age chart shows O Level running across Classes 9, 10 and 11, while Matric covers Classes 9 and 10. For a fuller comparison of the two exam routes, see SchoolNama's guides at /news/cambridge-vs-fbise and /news/o-levels-vs-matric-in-pakistan.

What matters is what the particular campus runs. In Islamabad, for example, The City School's directory lists its B-17 campus as playgroup to Class 3, its PWD campus as playgroup to IGCSE, and its E-11 campus as playgroup to A Level and Matric/FSc. If your child will need Matric later, or A Level at the same school, a junior branch that is close to home may mean a move at Class 6 or Class 9. Ask each campus which track it offers for your child's year, which board or Cambridge route it enters students for, and where its students usually go next.

Check A Level availability with the campus itself, because even one network's own pages can disagree. The City School's admissions page says A Level is offered only in 14 named cities. Of SchoolNama's launch cities, that list leaves out Multan, Abbottabad and Sukkur. Yet the same website's campus directory describes its Multan Campus as running from playgroup to A Level and Matric. Beaconhouse's finder tags College Programme branches in most launch cities, but its tags are incomplete, so don't take a missing tag to mean a city has no A Level branch. Ask the branch.

IB programmes are limited to a few campuses in both networks. Beaconhouse's campus finder tags six entries in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore with an IB programme, including BCP IBDP Margalla Campus in Islamabad, TNS Defence in Lahore and Beaconhouse PECHS Campus in Karachi. The City School says its Bahria Chapter in Islamabad is a candidate school for the IB Primary Years Programme that is pursuing authorisation. A candidate school is not yet an authorised IB World School. If IB matters to you, confirm the campus's status with the International Baccalaureate before you enrol.

Neither network publishes a national fee schedule on its website, and we found no fee page on either site. The City School's admissions page says parents receive a fee structure slip after completing the admission form and paying the registration fee. Older admissions-procedure pages on Beaconhouse's website, dating from 2017, say a fee voucher is generated once the test and interview have been cleared. Beaconhouse's charter of parents' rights says parents should receive timely and transparent communication about financial requirements, and should be told of any changes to them. In practice, the only reliable comparison is between the written fee schedules of the two or three campuses you are considering, collected before you pay.

Islamabad shows why the campus matters more than the brand. The capital's private-school regulator, ICT-PEIRA, publishes an online register of the class-wise fees each school files. On 1 October 2026 it listed seven entries for The City School in Islamabad, and their figures differ widely. For Grade I, the 2026-27 filings were Rs 33,463 at the E-11 campus and Rs 28,428 at the DHA campus on GT Road. The campus registered as The City School (IB Scheme) in Bahria Town Phase VII filed Rs 36,300 for 2025-26. The E-11 campus filed Rs 86,629 for A Level. Some campuses have not filed recently. The G-15 campus's latest filing is for 2024-25 and the B-17 campus's for 2023-24, so their lower figures are not current. The register does not say whether the figures are monthly. PEIRA also notes that the data comes from the schools themselves, which remain responsible for any discrepancy.

We could not make the same comparison for Beaconhouse. A search of PEIRA's online register for 'Beaconhouse' on 1 October 2026 returned no entries. That does not show that its Islamabad branches are unregistered. The online register lists about 1,100 institutions, while official data reported by Pakistan Today in April 2026 counted 1,571 registered private schools in Islamabad. Ask any Islamabad branch, of either network, for its PEIRA registration and the fee schedule it filed. Our guide at /news/low-fee-schools-in-islamabad explains how to read the register and what PEIRA's rules say about extra charges.

Budget for more than tuition. In November 2025, Dawn reported that the Competition Commission of Pakistan had issued show-cause notices to 17 major private school systems, including both Beaconhouse and The City School. The commission alleged that the schools compelled parents to buy logo-branded notebooks, workbooks and uniforms from authorised vendors, and its inquiry report said many study packs were up to 280% more expensive than similar items on the open market, without singling out any one school system in the reports we checked. These were allegations, and we did not find a final decision in the reports we checked. In August 2026, Dawn reported that Sindh's provincial ombudsman had ordered an inquiry into parents' complaints against Beaconhouse in Karachi. The parents alleged yearly fee increases in violation of the law, compulsory textbook purchases from designated vendors, and required uniform changes. The ombudsman asked the director general of private schools for a report, and Dawn's report carried no response from the school. Neither case shows that one network is worse than the other. Both are reasons to ask every campus for the full cost of books, uniforms and other charges in writing.

The admission processes are broadly similar, and The City School publishes more detail. It says registration is open throughout the year and that registering does not guarantee a place. For Class I onwards, children sit a 30-minute test in English, Urdu and Mathematics with a 50% pass mark, and both parents are interviewed. Results are shared within a week. Children are placed by their age on 31 July for sessions starting in August, or on 28 February for sessions starting in March or April. On its chart, Class 1 is for children aged 5 and over. Beaconhouse's online enquiry form says a school representative will contact you within two working days. Older procedure pages on its website describe a test followed by an interview, and say the school head meets every parent and child who comes for admission; confirm the current steps with the branch. We found no national age chart on Beaconhouse's website, so ask the branch for its cut-off date, especially if your child's birthday falls close to it.

Treat results claims on network websites with caution. The City School's A Level page claims a national lead in A Level results, citing a record 39 world distinctions and awards in 2021. Beaconhouse's O Level page cites 19 students who received distinctions across Pakistan in 2016. These are the networks' own claims, they are years old, and they cover the whole network. Ask the campus you are considering for its most recent results: how many students sat, and how their grades were spread, not just the top scorers.

SchoolNama's own data is a starting point, not a verdict. Our directory links 116 listings to Beaconhouse across all 15 launch cities. It links only 12 to The City School so far, in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. A further 54 listings have names beginning 'The City School' or 'City School' (counting one misspelt 'Thr City School') but are not yet linked to the network. Some of those are duplicates or offices, and a school with a similar name is not necessarily part of the network. Only 9 of the Beaconhouse listings and 2 of the City School listings carry a curriculum tag. So these counts reflect how far our records have got, not the size of either network or what any campus teaches. Once you have two finalists, the /compare page puts their profiles side by side. City pages such as /karachi, /lahore and /islamabad list nearby alternatives, and /pick-and-drop helps you price the daily commute, which can outweigh a fee difference.

Checklist before you decide

  • ✓List the campuses of each network you can reach in a reasonable commute, using each network's own campus finder, and note the class range each one covers.
  • ✓Check whether each campus runs your child's likely route (Cambridge O Level, IGCSE or Matric) and whether it continues to A Level or FSc, or whether your child would have to move branch.
  • ✓Ask each campus for its written fee schedule before you pay anything: admission, registration, security deposit, monthly tuition, annual charges, and Cambridge or board exam fees.
  • ✓Ask what books, notebooks, uniforms and other supplies cost, and whether you can buy them anywhere or only from the school or a named vendor.
  • ✓Ask how much fees rose last year and when the next increase is expected.
  • ✓In Islamabad, look the campus up on ICT-PEIRA's online register. If it isn't there, ask the campus for its PEIRA registration and the fees it filed.
  • ✓Ask for the campus's own recent results, including how many students sat and how their grades were spread, rather than network-wide claims.
  • ✓Check the admission age cut-off and the test format for your child's class, and when the session starts at that campus.
  • ✓If you want IB, confirm the campus's authorisation status with the International Baccalaureate, not just the school's brochure.
  • ✓Visit both shortlisted campuses, compare their profiles on SchoolNama's /compare page, and price the commute on /pick-and-drop before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Beaconhouse or The City School: which is better for my child?

Neither is better across the board. Both are large networks offering Cambridge O and A Level and Matric, and campuses within each network differ in class range, programmes and fees. Compare the specific branches you can reach on their written fees, the qualification your child will sit, their recent results and the commute, and choose the campus that fits your child.

Which network is more expensive?

It depends on the campus. Neither network publishes a national fee schedule online. In Islamabad, the Grade I fees in each City School campus's most recent filing with ICT-PEIRA (2025-26 or 2026-27, depending on the campus) ranged from Rs 28,428 to Rs 36,300. The register does not say whether these figures are monthly. We found no Beaconhouse entries on PEIRA's online register. Ask each campus for its written schedule and compare the full yearly cost.

Do both networks offer Matric as well as O Level?

Yes, both say they offer Matric alongside Cambridge O Level, but not every campus offers both. Beaconhouse says most of its students take O Level after its in-house curriculum ends at Class VIII. The City School's age chart shows O Level across Classes 9 to 11 and Matric across Classes 9 and 10. Ask the campus which track it runs for your child's year.

Do Beaconhouse or The City School offer IB?

Only at a few campuses. Beaconhouse's campus finder tags six entries in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore with an IB programme. The City School says its Bahria Chapter in Islamabad is a candidate school for the IB Primary Years Programme and is pursuing authorisation. Confirm a campus's status with the International Baccalaureate before you enrol.

How do the admission processes differ?

The City School says registration is open all year, and children joining Class I or above sit a 30-minute test in English, Urdu and Maths with a 50% pass mark, followed by an interview with both parents. Beaconhouse uses an online enquiry form, then a test and interview at the branch. Age cut-offs can depend on when the campus's session starts, so ask the branch.

Can I rely on the results the networks advertise?

Treat them as marketing. The network websites cite network-wide achievements from 2016 and 2021. Ask the campus you are considering for its own recent results, including how many students sat and how the grades were spread.

Why does SchoolNama show fewer City School campuses than the network's website?

SchoolNama has so far linked only 12 listings to The City School, in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Another 54 listings with similar names are not yet linked, and some of them are duplicates or offices. Our counts reflect how far our records have got, not the size of either network. Use the network's own campus directory alongside SchoolNama's city pages.
