American Curriculum vs Cambridge in Pakistan: Which Path Fits Your Child?

'American curriculum vs Cambridge in Pakistan' sounds like a coin flip between two options, but in most Pakistani cities it isn't. Cambridge O and A Level is the mainstream private-school curriculum, taught at hundreds of campuses. A genuine American programme with Advanced Placement is niche and geographically narrow. Before comparing educational philosophies, it is worth knowing what your child could realistically enrol in.

According to Cambridge International's own 2026 figures, more than 100,000 students from over 850 schools in Pakistan sat Cambridge O Level, IGCSE and A Level exams in the June 2026 series alone. Networks like Beaconhouse, Roots International, Lahore Grammar School and LACAS, plus many independent schools, all deliver this curriculum. A genuine American curriculum with Advanced Placement is offered by a much smaller set of schools. Karachi American School was founded in 1953 and runs an American college-preparatory AP programme from Pre-K to Grade 12; it is accredited by the Middle States Association. Lahore American School was founded in 1956, is also Middle States-accredited, and delivers an American programme with AP courses in high school. In Islamabad, the International School of Islamabad was founded in 1965 and is described in the US Department of State's 2026 fact sheet as an American-curriculum school, but its own academics page today lists an IB Primary Years Programme and an IB Diploma in Grades 11 to 12 rather than AP. TNS Beaconhouse in Lahore, also Middle States-accredited, offers an American High School Diploma alongside IB Middle Years and IB Diploma tracks. Outside these four schools, a full American diploma with AP is difficult to find anywhere in Pakistan.

Then there is the naming problem. American Lycetuff and American Lyceum are two of the largest school networks in Pakistan with 'American' in their name, but their published curriculum is Cambridge (Early Years through O Level), not an American diploma. That does not make them worse schools; it just means the brand does not tell you the curriculum. Always confirm whether the school is a registered Cambridge exam centre, or is accredited by a US regional body such as MSA or WASC, before assuming what your child will actually sit for at 16 and 18.

Once you look at Pakistani university admissions, the two paths diverge sharply. For Cambridge, IBCC uses a published formula that scales your best eight O Level grades to an SSC out of 1050 and your A Level grades to an HSSC out of 1100, using a public grade-to-marks table (A*=90, A=85, B=75, C=65, D=55, E=45), with the A* mark revised annually per subject. For a US High School Diploma, IBCC applies a 15 per cent marks deduction on the total to correct for the internal marking that US schools use versus Pakistan's external boards. Advanced Placement scores can be attached on original College Board reports, but they do not undo the 15 per cent cut. In practice, Cambridge students often enter MDCAT and engineering merit lists with higher equated marks than American-diploma students with similar real academic standing.

The story flips overseas. For US universities, Cambridge A Level grades are well-known to admissions officers and every top American college accepts them, but a US high-school transcript plus AP scores and an SAT is still the most native application and can trigger more generous credit transfer at some US universities. For UK universities, Cambridge A Level is the local default; a US High School Diploma alone is usually not enough for direct entry at top UK universities without strong AP scores or a foundation year. For top Pakistani private universities that accept SAT — LUMS, IBA and NUST among them — either path is workable if the student sits the SAT.

Fee structures are the last big gap, but exact numbers move too fast to publish reliably in a comparison guide — get the current fee schedule directly from each school, not from a rumour or an old blog. The wider point is availability.
