Aitchison vs LGS: Curriculum, Fees, Admissions and School Experience

Aitchison College is one boys-only campus with day places and boarding houses; Lahore Grammar School is a family of separately managed school clusters, and none of the LGS websites we opened mentions boarding. We read both sides' official pages on 14 October 2026 and set out who each one admits, what it teaches, when it tests and what it publishes about fees.

Short answer

Aitchison College is a single boys-only school in Lahore that takes day boys and boarders, teaches Cambridge courses and offers FBISE Matric and FSc in its senior years, and posts one fee table. LGS is a group of separately run school clusters, so gender mix, exam route (Cambridge, Matric or IB), admission dates and fees differ by campus; none of the LGS sites we checked mentions boarding.

How we researched this: On 14 October 2026 we read Aitchison College's admissions, fee, boarding, academics and school pages plus its 2027-28 application form, admissions FAQ and syllabus guide; the official sites of several LGS clusters (lgs.edu.pk, lahoregrammar.school, sb.lgsjt.edu.pk, lgsdefence.edu.pk, lgsgulberg.edu.pk and lgsinternational.edu.pk) and a November 2023 VIS Credit Rating report on Lahore Grammar School (Private) Limited. A script searched SchoolNama's Lahore listings for both names. Neither school is ranked here, and SchoolNama's seeded sample reviews played no part.

Start by pinning down the two things on the scale. Aitchison College is one institution: a boys' school on The Mall in Lahore that runs from the first Junior School year to the final A Level or FSc year, with day boys and boarders on the same grounds. Lahore Grammar School is a brand shared by many campuses that are managed in separate groups, publish separate websites and set their own admission calendars. In practice, the real decision is between Aitchison and one particular LGS branch near your home, so keep the branch name in front of you while you read.

Aitchison describes itself as educating more than 3,000 boys on a campus of around 200 acres, split into a Junior School (roughly ages 5 to 10), a Prep School (11 to 13) and a Senior School (14 to 18). It dates its present site to 1886, the year the Punjab Chiefs' College was renamed Aitchison College. Its About page also says the college runs two Campus High Schools inside its grounds for a further 800 boys and girls, funded as charity schools that charge no tuition. Its Principal is Dr S.M. Turab Hussain, according to the Principal's Office page. Its fee page says that fees and charges are amended every year by Board decision.

LGS is organised very differently. A November 2023 rating report by VIS Credit Rating Company describes Lahore Grammar School (Private) Limited as owned equally by eight individuals and divided into five clusters, each run by a working director; VIS adds that the clusters have more autonomy over their own cash flows and capital-spending plans. The same report counted more than 90 campuses in 15 cities while noting that the network is largely Lahore based; an undated page on the LGS Gulberg Network site gives a lower count of 21 Lahore branches and 50 nationwide, so treat any single total with caution. Even the main domain is narrow: lgs.edu.pk states that it serves just three Gulberg schools, 55 Main, 30 Main and 31 FCC. lahoregrammar.school is the site of the cluster directed by Mrs Nighat Ali, which VIS says is the largest, with more than 34,000 students and 55 campuses. The Johar Town group lists its own preschool, junior, middle and senior schools on sb.lgsjt.edu.pk, plus a campus in Sargodha. A rule printed by one of these sites does not automatically apply at another.

Gender is the quickest filter. Aitchison admits boys only, and its All Boys' Education page explains why it prefers single-sex teaching while noting that senior boys take part in some events with girls. LGS began in 1979 as a girls' school founded by a group of women, and both the lahoregrammar.school and Johar Town senior boys' sites date its first boys' branch to 1992. Today the arrangement varies by campus. The 55 Main admissions page writes for parents of daughters. In Johar Town, most of the cluster's junior, middle and senior schools are listed separately for girls and boys. LGS Defence's admissions page for 2026-27 lists all-girls O and A Level programmes at Phase 1, and all-boys and all-girls O Level, a co-education A Level programme and the IB Diploma at Phase 5. If you have a daughter, Aitchison is not an option, and if you have a son, check that the LGS branch you like admits boys at the class you need.

Boarding is where the two differ most. Aitchison has eight boarding houses: Gwyn for Junior School boys, Saigol and Monnoo for the Prep School, and five senior houses, Kelly, Godley, Leslie Jones, K&N's and Shirazi. The Our Schools page puts boarding capacity at up to 500 out-station boys in each of the three schools, in its own wording. The rules are strict. Lahore families are largely shut out of this: any boy with over six months of schooling in the city is ineligible to board. A boarder admitted to the Junior or Prep School must complete three years of boarding, a boarder admitted to the Senior School at H1 or FSc 1 must finish his education as a boarder, and no boarder may switch to day status before his term is done. Weekly boarding is not an entry category. None of the LGS websites we opened on 14 October 2026 mentions boarding or hostel places, so if boarding matters, ask any LGS branch directly.

On curriculum, Aitchison combines Cambridge courses with national boards. The Junior School page places the Cambridge Primary curriculum in English, Mathematics and Science at the core, with computing including robotics and coding taught from K2. The Prep School adds compulsory Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies to Cambridge English, Mathematics and Science, offers Arabic, Persian, Mandarin, German and French, and makes coding compulsory. The Senior School page says boys are prepared for Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A Levels and for FBISE Matric and FSc (pre-medical). In Years 10 and 11 a boy chooses a National or an International stream, and the school warns that the International stream does not include the subjects required for admission to Pakistani universities, so weigh the stream choice early if a local university is likely. The academics page also mentions Aga Khan board options for Matric and FSc while the Senior School page names only FBISE, so ask which boards are offered for your son's year. We found no reference to the IB on the Aitchison pages we read.

At LGS the exam route depends on the campus. The Gulberg girls' branch at 55 Main describes a Cambridge affiliation for both O and A Level; its pupils take O Level papers after Year 11, and A Level teaching there began in 1995. Matric is on offer too: lahoregrammar.school names it next to the Cambridge courses, and VIS records Matric in both the mainstream branches and the cheaper Landmark ones, the latter pairing it with O Level only. The IB is available at a handful of sites only: LGS Defence's home page says Phase V is an authorised IB World School for the Diploma Programme, the Johar Town cluster lists IGCSE in Classes 9 to 11 and the IB Diploma in Classes 11 and 12 at JT International Senior, and LGS International's fee table runs through two Diploma years. Families undecided on the exam board can read /news/ib-vs-cambridge-pakistan first.

As of 14 October 2026, Aitchison is taking applications for August 2027 entry. Forms became available in the first week of October 2026, and the completed form must reach the college by courier by 5 p.m. on 30 November 2026 if the boy is applying as a day scholar, or by 31 December 2026 for a boarding place. A boy can apply for day or boarding, not both. The published calendar puts medical and age checks in March 2027 (marked tentative), tests for all age groups in the first week of June 2027, offer letters and the acceptance deadline in June 2027, fee payment in July 2027 and the start of school in August 2027. Entry is at K1 (boarders only, which the FAQ reserves for boys from distant or remote areas), K2 (day and boarding), K3 to K6 (boarders only), E2 or Grade 7 (day and boarding) and M1 and M2 (boarders only). The college's estimate, which it says may change, is 325 places: 225 for day boys and 100 for boarders. Of the day places in that estimate, 210 are in K2 and 15 in E2, so for a Lahore day boy the published routes are mainly K2, which the Junior School page says most boys enter between the ages of 6 and 7, or one of the few Grade 7 seats. There is also a later route: the FAQ says the college 'may decide to admit students into H1, A Level (Year 12) and Federal Board F.Sc. (Pre-medical) based on external results', and the application form says Senior School (H1/F.Sc.1) applications are 'treated separately and assessed by external results and interview if applicable'.

Aitchison's process is strict and closed. Age limits are enforced without waivers: for 2027-28, K2 applicants must be born between 1 June 2020 and 31 May 2021, and E2 applicants between 1 June 2015 and 31 May 2016. The college doctor verifies age, a boy may sit only once in a testing cycle, and the FAQ says there is no kinship category. Test papers and scores are not shared with parents, and families cannot visit before registering. The syllabus guide for 2027-28 covers English and Mathematics for every entry year and includes Urdu sections, and says the papers rank candidates rather than pass or fail them. Foreign passport holders who have been schooled in Pakistan for six months or less can apply in writing for an Urdu exemption and sit an extra English paper instead.

LGS has no single admissions round. 55 Main scheduled three test days for the 2026-27 year, the last on 7 August 2026; on 14 October 2026 its admissions page had not yet been updated with any 2027-28 date. Junior and Senior applicants there sit English, Urdu and Mathematics, Class 9 to 11 applicants take extra tests in their chosen electives, and the school says passing does not guarantee a seat because places are limited and it tries to keep class sizes down, so some applicants go on a waiting list; those who fail one or more tests can take a second round at no extra charge. For the 2026-27 cycle, LGS Defence's advisory said A Level offers would be conditional on predicted O Level grades and an interview, and confirmed only after Cambridge results in August 2026. Ask the specific branch for its next test date before you plan around it.

Aitchison publishes its fees; most LGS campuses we checked do not. Aitchison's table is labelled 2026-27. Tuition is charged per month in four bands: K1 up to K5 pay Rs 74,500; K6, E2 and M1 pay Rs 81,500; the 9th and 10th classes with M2, C1 and C2 pay Rs 90,200; and the FSc and H years pay Rs 103,200. Boarding is billed on top, from Rs 78,900 monthly for the youngest boys up to Rs 94,200 in the final years. On joining, the page lists two admission-fee rows, Govt. at Rs 175,000 and Non-Govt. at Rs 350,000, without saying who falls in which, plus a deposit of Rs 100,000 that is returned later. Just applying costs Rs 60,000 for a day place or Rs 30,000 for boarding, and the form states that this is not refunded. Three extras are marked optional: transport (Rs 22,000 monthly), riding or arena polo (Rs 16,500 monthly) and marksmanship (Rs 8,250 monthly). The FAQ says the college does not normally offer bursaries or fee assistance, and the form asks for both parents' tax numbers and joint annual income. Because the page says charges change each year, a boy starting in August 2027 may pay a different amount.

We found no group-wide LGS fee list. The one detailed schedule we found belongs to LGS International, an IB campus, and on 14 October 2026 it was still the 2025-26 version. Its monthly line begins at Rs 58,810 for the PG to KG years, is Rs 64,035 in Grades 1 to 5 and climbs to Rs 84,945 for DP2. New families also face Rs 100,000 for admission and Rs 85,000 marked as a refundable security, with registration at Rs 15,000, or Rs 20,000 for the Diploma years. The table also shows a two-month regular fee, so ask how often bills are issued. Beyond that campus, the only wider guide is a set of bands VIS printed in November 2023, of Rs 30-36K per month in mainstream schools, Rs 14-16K in Landmark and Rs 45-60K in the IB programme. Those are nearly three years old and were reported by a rating agency, not quoted by the school, so ask the branch for its current written schedule. Because the Aitchison table is for 2026-27 and the LGS International table is for 2025-26, set them side by side only after each school confirms the session your child will join. For a walk-through of Lahore fee cards, see /news/school-fees-in-lahore.

Day-to-day life follows from these structures. Aitchison makes sport compulsory: Prep School boys must swim and play at least two other games, the Senior School lists more than 20 clubs and societies, and the Senior School page says the college groups its pupils into 17 houses, 5 for boarders and 12 for day boys. The separate Boarding Houses page counts eight boarding houses in all: Gwyn for the Junior School, Saigol and Monnoo for the Prep School, and five senior houses for the Senior School. The two pages do not explain why their boarding-house counts differ. Boarders have supervised evening tutorials, and boys wear shalwar kameez, blazer and turban on Fridays in summer. LGS campuses describe themselves in their own terms: 55 Main stresses the humanities and social sciences, the performing arts, regional languages and community service, while the Johar Town senior boys' campus describes a site of nearly 3.5 acres with a swimming pool, gym and science labs. None of this is measured independently here, so treat it as the schools' own account and judge it on a visit where one is allowed.

Our directory can help you find the campuses, though it cannot choose between them. On 14 October 2026 a script matched a single Aitchison entry in Lahore, /schools/aitchison-college-lahore, against nine Lahore entries carrying the LGS or Lahore Grammar School name; four worth opening are /schools/lgs-international-lahore, /schools/lahore-grammar-school-phase-v-lahore, /schools/lahore-grammar-school-johar-town-lahore and /schools/lahore-grammar-school-for-boys-lgs-jt-lahore. All are basic map-based profiles without fee data, and the Aitchison profile is marked co-ed although the college admits boys only, so rely on the school's own pages where they disagree. Browse alternatives on /lahore, and once you have two finalists, line them up on /compare. We had no pick-and-drop operator registered for Lahore on 14 October 2026, which makes Aitchison's optional transport, or your own arrangement, the thing to price. Families preparing a son for Aitchison's June 2027 tests, or a child for an LGS entry test, can look for help on /tutors, and /news/lgs-vs-beaconhouse explains how the LGS clusters differ.

Checklist before you decide

  • ✓Write down the exact LGS branch you are considering and use only that branch's website, forms and fee schedule.
  • ✓Confirm your child is eligible on gender: Aitchison takes boys only, and LGS campuses differ by class.
  • ✓For Aitchison, check your son's date of birth against the 2027-28 age window for his entry class; the college gives no age waivers.
  • ✓Decide between day and boarding before applying to Aitchison, since you cannot apply for both and boarders cannot switch to day status later.
  • ✓Lahore residents: boarding at Aitchison is closed to boys who have spent over six months in a Lahore school, so plan on a day place.
  • ✓Send Aitchison day applications by courier to arrive by 5 p.m. on 30 November 2026, or boarding applications by 31 December 2026, with the non-refundable application fee and the listed documents.
  • ✓Ask Aitchison whether the 2026-27 fee table will change for August 2027 entry, and which admission-fee category (Govt. or Non-Govt.) applies to you.
  • ✓Ask the LGS branch for its 2027-28 test dates, subjects tested, waiting-list policy and current written fee schedule, including admission, security and registration charges and how often bills are issued.
  • ✓If your child may want a place at a Pakistani university, ask either school which board and subject combination keeps that option open; Aitchison says its International stream in Years 10 and 11 lacks the subjects those universities require.
  • ✓Map the daily commute or the boarding arrangement before committing, and keep a second school on your list.

Frequently asked questions

How is Aitchison different from LGS?

Aitchison is one boys-only school in Lahore with both day boys and boarders, a mix of Cambridge and FBISE routes, and a single published fee table. LGS is a network of separately managed clusters, and none of the LGS websites we opened on 14 October 2026 mentions boarding; its gender arrangements, exam routes, admission dates and fees vary from campus to campus.

Which is better, Aitchison or LGS?

We do not rank them, and there is no common yardstick both publish. The deciding questions are practical: whether your child is a boy, whether you need boarding, which entry year you are aiming for, which exam route you want and what the specific LGS branch near you charges.

Does LGS offer boarding like Aitchison?

None of the LGS websites we opened on 14 October 2026 mentions boarding or hostel places. Aitchison does run eight houses, though boys who have studied in Lahore for over six months are excluded from boarding.

When are Aitchison's 2027-28 admissions?

As of 14 October 2026, forms are available, day applications must arrive by 5 p.m. on 30 November 2026 and boarding applications by 31 December 2026. Tests for all age groups are set for the first week of June 2027, with offer letters in June 2027 and school starting in August 2027.

What are Aitchison's fees compared with LGS?

Aitchison's 2026-27 table lists monthly tuition of Rs 74,500 to Rs 103,200, with boarding charged on top, and says fees change yearly by Board decision. We found no group-wide LGS fee list; the IB-focused LGS International campus, as of 14 October 2026, still displayed a 2025-26 sheet whose monthly line tops out at Rs 84,945 for the final Diploma year. Ask any other LGS branch for its own written schedule.

Do Aitchison or LGS offer Matric and FSc?

Aitchison's Senior School offers FBISE Matric and FSc (pre-medical) alongside Cambridge IGCSE and A Levels. Within LGS, the lahoregrammar.school site says Matric is offered alongside O and A Level, but availability depends on the branch, so check before applying.
