Lahore High Court orders Punjab schools to bus at least half their students, making transport a registration condition

In a judgment dated 13 August 2026, Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court held that vehicular emissions account for 45 percent of Lahore's pollution and directed the Punjab government to make schools shift children from private vehicles to school buses, provide buses for at least half of their students, and treat transport compliance as a condition of school registration. Reporting on 16 September 2026 says the government's response so far has been limited to meetings and letters to schools, and that school officials see little serious enforcement. Parents in Lahore and other Punjab cities may be asked by their school to move children onto school transport before the autumn smog season.
