Punjab education minister: reports of a three-day school week or 'smart lockdown' are not true

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat said on 17 September 2026 that no formal proposal to close schools three days a week to save fuel has been placed before him, and that there is no proposal under consideration for a 'smart lockdown' of educational institutions. He said academic activities will continue as normal across Punjab on the regular Monday-to-Friday week, argued the fuel saving would be negligible because around 90 percent of government-school students walk to school, and urged parents not to believe unverified closure claims circulating online.
